In memory of Jack McCort a College Fund has been set up for his sons Jack & Will.

Before Jack’s (Sr.) untimely death this year he set up savings plans for his sons. These 529 plans grow tax deferred and will ultimately be used for the their education. John D. “Jack” McCort of Alamo, California, formerly of Bridgman, MI, passed away on Thursday, June 29, 2006 at his home, following an extended illness. He was born June 29, 1944 in St. Joseph, MI, to William R. and Sara E. (Ackerman) McCort. A 1962 graduate of Bridgman High School, Jack excelled on the school golf team, was a talented member of the band and choir, and president of his senior class, Jack graduated from Michigan State University in 1967 and served in the Peace Corps in the Tongan Island for two years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and golfing throughout his life.


Jack had a successful career at Safeway Stores for almost 20 years and is remembered as an outstanding wine and spirits buyer. He enjoyed fine wine, gourmet food and traveling to Europe and Hawaii. More important, Jack was our best friend that we will remember as a fun-loving, sensitive and sincere father, grandfather and husband. Jack had a dry sense of humor, quick-wit and an incredible repertoire of one liners. Jack was known to have a cocktail or two at Elliot's, nicknamed by Jack and Will as "the Drink Shop."


Jack was preceded in death by his parents. Surviving are his wife Betsy, sons John (Jack) Edwin Thomas & William (Will) Robert Lewis; daughter Katie (McCort) Rios & husband Juan, two grandsons, Andrew and Joshua; daughter Meghan (McCort) Hernandez & husband Robin and granddaughter Madeleine. Also surviving are a brother, Thomas McCort of New Troy, MI; a sister Sarah (Ted) Hogue of Bridgman, MI; His former spouse Arlene McCort, in-laws Lewis and Rosemary Brooks of Burlingame, CA; two sister-in-laws, Rosemary (Brooks) Kolokousis and husband Rob, their son Nikos; Ginny (Brooks) Selwood and husband Bob; & brother-in-law Tom Brooks.
