Othel
Home

As the twenty-fourth rune, Othel encompasses several different but allied concepts. It certainly represents possessions and tends to represent land, buildings or more specifically the home – usually the most important possession we are likely to own and the greatest part of our estate that we leave to the next generation. If Othel represents money, then the likelihood is that it signifies money that is in some way tied up, such as wills, legacies or covenants.

Othel is closely associated with the planet Saturn, implying that the possessions it refers to carry some sort of restriction or limitation – hence its connection with land, which incurs duties and obligations, and cannot be packed up and moved about. This rune is also a symbol of ancestry, not just what we inherit in the form of the ancestral home and the bank account, but also the particular psychological traits that have been passed down from one generation to another. Othel makes us look at who we are, where we come from, and finally, where we are going. As with all Saturnian affairs, Othel carries the message of “karma” and reminds us that we should “keep our house in order”.

REVERSED

When Othel appears reversed in a rune cast it implies that the querent will have to face alone whatever troubles lie ahead. There is no recourse to outside help. It indicates a certain finality, that the querent has no option but to square up to the situation and deal honorably with whatever life decides to throw at them. This may well mean failure, or simply delay, but there si no way of fighting the inevitability of events. The querent would be advised to take a very realistic approach and understand that there is no avoiding “karma”.
