Ken |
|
| The outer meaning of this rune concerns gifts. Ken is associated with
Mars and the spring equinox, when the arrival of new life was traditionally
celebrated by ancient peoples. By extension therefore, this symbol of
fertility can also denote the imminent arrival of a child. Ken is a masculine rune, and relates to the dominant person in the situation. If the querent is enquiring about business then Ken implies that the dominant person will be making offers. If this is the querent, the rune cast shows whether the offer will be accepted; if the other protagonist is making the offer, the position of Ken in the rune cast reveals whether the offer should be accepted. This is true in personal releationships, too, where Ken implies hat the dominant partner is about to offer a gift. The surrounding runes reveal the motivation behind the gift, and whether it should be accepted. Ken also has an inner meaning that concerns the acquisition of knowledge. In Scotland the word “ken” is still used to mean “know” or “knowledge”. In addition, the ancient symbol of a torch denotes spiritual enlightenment – “the torch that lights the way”. The querent may be required to use his or her own inner knowledge to light the way for others less fortunate than themselves. In reverse, this rune signifies loss. If the querent is involved in some potentially rewarding business deal the reversal of the rune shows that it will fall apart. If he or she is hoping for a child then it denotes false hopes, false alarms and barrenness. It may even signify loss of employment or a relationship. It is not all doom and gloom, however, because this loss may be mitigated by positive accompanying runes, implying that any loss incurred now could well prove to be only temporary. |
