Ing
Fertility

This is a primal rune whose symbolism is clearly that of female genitalia. The essential meaning of Ing is completion or, by implication, orgasm. Orgasm is, of course, somewhat double-edged, as is recognized by the French in their description of it as “le petit mort” (The little death). It is the desired goal that spends one’s force. The appearance of Ing in a rune cast is almost always a good omen. Only in very rare cases does it produce a bad result. It is also one of the runes that is unaffected by the way in which it falls, showing no difference whether it is upright or reversed.

On the material lever, in some instances Ing may show that the querent has been undergoing some kind of difficulty and that the situation is now drawing to a close, with relief at hand. Since Ing was a fertility god and this rune is, at least symbolically, sexual, it can show the imminent birth of a child or perhaps of some new idea or venture. This is the inherent contradiction in orgasm – “the little death” that simultaneously plants the seen of new life. Pursuing the analogy of child birth, in most cases the birth of a child is a cause for great celebration and much happiness, so by implication the changes on the horizon for the querent will herald happiness and fulfillment.

On a more spiritual level, this rune shows that the querent is soon to reach a state of inner peace and quiet, of inner balance. In all cases time will tell whether this happy state is lasting or simply transitory, and the accompanying runes will give strong sugeestions as to the eventual outcome.
