"nearly a state away" for Beth, 6/'04

i.

under moon shine, an ant
   concerning a daisy :

let me not say I am...
   but my spirit is praying for her
knowing she had already won.

ii.

a hatless scarecrow,
   long, straw hair springing up
then down :

thank you,    thank you,
   for tearing another veil.

iii.

a sparrow perched on my fire escape :

sweet honey, sweet rock,
   sweet water, sweet milk,
sweet lamb, sweet grain,
   please help her feel
youve kept her name.

iv.

a grad student standing in a crowded subway train :

and, almighty strength lighting
   our sun and moon, forgive me
for not being a better brother,
   a better friend, a better servant,
a better child, wearing your armor.

v.

a baby inside his mother :

remember her dreams, her prayers,
   small groups she led,
her head laying quietly on a table,
   her heart humming your name.

vi.

a willow tree in a small, urban garden :

oh, watch her, Lord,
   burying her feet in your soil,
preparing her stance for the storm;
   beginning to laugh;... laughing;
beginning to cry;... smiling;
   her lungs filling with sunshine,
... be dry in the rain.

vii.

and, finally,... she saw.
