Sonnet de Jour
Shall I compose as a Shakespearean lay,
This deadline-driven poetical lament?
I wrack my brains for clever things to say;
The words that come seem almost heaven-sent.
Or shall I write in some Petrarchan form,
(Whose demon still torments the college class)
With rules that make assignments sound half-ass?
Nay, nay, it is too noisy in my dorm.
What other method can I recommend
To those who struggle with the rhyming scheme,
And cry, “O crap, the time is nearly gone
My poem sucks so bad I scarce can breathe”?
Ahh, Heck with it! I’ll throw something together
If Joe hates it, I’ll blame it on the weather.
An original composition by David Smith.
