Bunta Fujiwara is the owner of a tofu shop in Akina, and the father of Takumi; he is probably THE best driver in the series. He is the original driver of the mysterious AE 86 that holds the record of the fastest downhill time at Akina. The only one who suspected that Bunta is in fact the driver of the mysterious AE 86, is the proprietor of the gas station where his son Takumi and his friends Itsuki and Iketani work as attendants. One night, the proprietor of the gas station, Yuuichi, sees a fleet of cars entering Akina - the Akagi Red Suns. He then makes a phone call to Bunta, saying that he spotted Bunta's AE 86 on the road and yet Bunta didn't acknowledge him. Bunta said that he no longer drove the AE 86 to deliver tofu, and when asked who drove the car now, he answered that it was his son Takumi who drove it. Surprised, Yuuichi asked Bunta how long has Takumi been driving the AE 86 and Bunta answered "Since 5 years." Bunta has a unique way of training his son to drive; every morning when Takumi has to go on his tofu delivery route, Bunta will give Takumi a cup of water. The cup of water is placed in the drink holder; Takumi must not spill even a drop of it while he is driving. The amount of water is increased every now and then - in the first episode, the water level in the cup was only a few centimetres below the rim. >_< Bunta is also responsible for the mechanical settings of the AE 86; this can be seen in the episode where Takumi had to race against Takeshi Nakazato's Nissan Skyline GT-R R32. |
