Chapter 7

Financial Circumstances

7.1 Sources of Income

In Question 22, participants were asked to indicate all of their current sources of income and economic support.  Top of the list, with a frequency of 49, was that of husband or partner’s work, with part-time work mentioned 34 times and social welfare at 32.  More than half the women had two sources of income (usually their husband/partner’s work and their own part-time earnings).  Forty women were in households with only one income, while seven had a total of 3 sources.

Participants were then asked to indicate their main source of income and the results can be seen in the Pie Chart in Figure 6.  Forty three percent specified their husband/partner's work, eighteen per cent indicated social welfare and seventeen per cent specified their own full-time earnings as their main source of income.  From these findings, it is clear that the majority of women in relationships (formal or informal) are dependent on their husband/partner for financial support.  Only 17 women see themselves as being self-sufficient financially, while a total of 23 rely on social welfare payments or unemployment benefit.
