have it.  All you have to do is concentrate on this ability strongly for them, and it will be so, because you have received the power from me.  But try to be selective with those you give it to, for the power can lead to more trouble than it's worth, if one is not careful.  Alas, it is very difficult to--"
She noticed that something had caught his eye on her person, because his sentence had stopped abruptly.
So, she looke down at herself to see what he was staring at.  "What is it?" she asked, as his eyes still searched her body.
"That cross you're wearing ... it's made of silver!" he exclaimed.  "It
is--I know it is, because I recognize it!
"Perhaps, you can--"  His words stopped there as he lifed his ear to the air to listen, alert and cocking his head, like a great eagle with his eyes burning bright-gold for an instant, then back to their, former, icy-blue.  "There is not time now!
   "
Quickly, will you try to see me again, if I get you out of here without Ramon finding out?  I don't care how long it takes--I've been here for so long, already, it hardly matters because time really has no meaning fo rme now.  But just please come back!" he beseeched her.
There was no way she could refuse the angel's pleading look.  So, she said:  "Yes, of course, but--"  She wanted to know more.
However, Za'aphiel interrupted almost frantically:  "--Try to find the key to the upper door so you can get back down here to come see me, or bring something with you that you might be able to use to pick the lock with.
     "Even if I
could break the upper door down, it would make for too much noise an probably alert the rest of the household that something was going on down here.  But Ramon has re-enforced the door and I am restrained again, remember?  I have no one to count on but you, so you will do as I ask, won't you?
"Well, yes, if I can, but what's going on?  How could I possibly get out of here in enough time for Ramon not to find me, if
you can't?
"You will go put the key back up above the outside of the doorway.  Then shut the door tight until you are sure that it is locked in place, with you on the inside so he will not know for
sure if you have been here.  Maybe he will think he was having an overactive imagination, or thnk you were just having a bad dream, if he doesn't see you when he comes in.
"Stand to the side of the door, against the wall, where it opens, and wait for him to come through it.  When his back is to you, I will keep him busy talking, then you will slip out and make your escape.  Hopefully, the upper door will be left open.
"Now hurry, against the wall quickly, because I think I hear him jingling his keys up there now!" he whispered frantically.  Instantly, she started to obey him without further questioning.
But as she headed toward the door, he whispered to her, again, but softly this time:  "Please, bring the silver-cross back with you when you come.  Don't forget; I need it, Faith.  I will explain later."
"Okay," she whispered back.  But for the life of her, she couldn't understand why an angel would need a cross.
Weren't they divine anyway?  Was it possible that a thing like this could bring comfort to an angel, just like it could for mankind?
Still, she silently promised herself that she would do as he had asked.  There wasn't really anymore time to think about it anyway, because she had to make hasted for the door before it was too later!  Then, as quickly as she could, she replaced the key where it belonged, and quietly pulled the door shut to lock herself in.
It was just in the nick of time, because they heard the thuds of Ramon's footsteps on the frozen ground as he descended the stairs, and then heard them stop just outside of the foorway, like he was feeling around for the key.  Next, the key was heard being jammed into the lock, and then being turned until it clicked out of place.
Then the door slowly began to open.
As Ramon stepped inside the room, Faith's heart was so loud, she was afraid that he would hear it.  But he did not.  Instead, without turning, he walked right on past her and over to Za'aphiel, who sat innocently enough on the platform, in the corner.
Without waiting another second, she saw her chance.  Silently darting out the open door, she then stole her escape up the stairs to the heavy iron-door at the tip, hoping it was open.
     It was!
Gasping with relief, she wasted no time n sliding outside, and slipping--almost falling on the rocky pathway leading back to the house, yet she kept on glancing back in fear from time to time, to make sure that Ramon wasn't close behind her....
