But Pheebes has reason to believe that the woman knows more about her situation than she reveals - a suspicion that is confirmed by episode's end. Meanwhile, the chill between Ross and Rachel appears to be ending - until Ross's free-spirited new girlfriend arrives.

#74 The One with the Jellyfish (Sept 25, 1997)

Ross and Rachel may be on the threshold of a new era - until a misunderstanding gets in the way. And then there's Phoebe, who's still freaked out over meeting her birth mother, a former hippie. Can they make peace with the past? Well, this much is certain things will never, ever be the same for Monica, Chandler and Joey after Monica is stung by a jellyfish and the boys are forced to take drastic measures.

Phoebe undergoes in vitro fertilization after agreeing to be a surrogate mother for newlyweds Frank Jr. and Alice. The odds are against her getting pregnant on the first attempt, but Frank and Alice can't afford a second try. So Phoebe gives the petri dish a pep talk and lets the chips fall where they may. Meanwhile, Monica and Rachel make a wager with Joey and Chandler when they take a quiz that's supposed to determine which pair knows the other better.

Kathy's sexy role in a play irks Chandler; personal-shopper Rachel develops a crush on a client.

Ross, not usually one to act on impulse, takes a flying leap; he proposes to Emily. Unhappy with her shuttling back and forth from her home in London, Ross decides to ask Emily to live with him in New York, an arrangement that turns out to be an impossibility. Then she drops the word "married," and Ross seizes the moment. But is he sure after only six weeks? "I dated Carol for four years," Ross reasons, "and I wound up married to a pregnant lesbian." Meanwhile, Rachel and Monica demand their apartment back from Joey and Chandler - and this time they mean it.

 

#93 The One with all the Wedding Dresses (Apr 16, 1998)

Monica tries on Emily's wedding dress; Ross's plans affect Rachel and Joshua; Chandler insists Joey get help for his snoring.

In a clip show, Rachel receives her invitation to Ross and Emily's wedding.

 

#95 The One with the Worst Best Man Ever (Apr 30, 1998)

Best man Joey loses Ross's heirloom ring; pregnant Phoebe has mood swings.

 

#96 The One with Ross's Wedding, Part I and II (May 7, 1998)

Ross and Emily prepare for their London wedding in this eventful episode, which was partially shot before a British studio audience and features appearances by Sarah Ferguson, Tom Conti and Jennifer Saunders. Chandler, Joey and Monica are there for the couple, whose plans go awry when they learn that their wedding chapel is being demolished. Rachel has opted to stay in New York with Phoebe, until she realizes she loves Ross. Rachel goes to London - but her arrival isn't the only surprise in store for the happy couple.

 

 

Season 5

 

#97 The One after Ross Says Rachel (Sept 24, 1998)

After Ross says "Rachel" instead of "Emily" during his wedding vows, he and his British bride must decide whether to resume the wedding. Complicating matters is Rachel, who went to England to tell Ross she loves him. After hearing his Freudian slip during the ceremony, she's more confused than ever. Meanwhile, Monica and Chandler, whose passion spontaneously combusted in the previous episode, are still very hot for one another.

 

#98 The One with all the Kissing (Oct 1, 1998)

Rachel wants to tell Ross that she still loves him; Chandler must buss Rachel and Phoebe to cover up a kiss of Monica.

 

#99 The Hundredth Episode (Oct 8, 1998)

Phoebe's surrogate pregnancy comes to an end when she delivers triplets in the series' 100th episode. Written by series creators Marta Kauffman and David Crane, the story begins with Phoebe arriving at the hospital, where she unsettles the nurse by explaining that the babies' father is her brother. What's more, Phoebe's doctor is obsessed with Happy Days; her brother arrives without his wife but is prepared to be Phoebe's "LaMazda" coach; and Joey appears to be suffering from sympathy pains. Then, there's one last complication: Phoebe wants to keep on of the babies.

 

#100 The One where Phoebe Hates PBS (Oct 15, 1998)

Phoebe reveals her hatred of PBS; Emily tells Ross she'll see him again if he stops seeing Rachel.

 

#101 The One with the Kips (Oct 29, 1998)

Monica and Chandler plan a weekend getaway; Ross has to tell Rachel that to save his marriage he can't see her anymore.

 

#102 The One with the Yeti (Nov 5, 1998)

Emily's demands regarding Rachel weigh on Ross; Rachel and Monica encounter a hairy, beast-like man; Phoebe receives a fur coat.

 

#103 The One where Ross Moves In (Nov 12, 1998)

Ross moves in with the boys; Phoebe dates a health inspector; Rachel plays hard to get for Danny, who's oblivious.

 

#104 The One with the Thanksgiving Flashbacks (Nov 19, 1998)

The friends reflect on bad Thanksgiving experiences and Monica serves up the biggest turkey of them all when she recalls her first encounter with Chandler. The scene shifts to 1987 (familiar to series fans as the year of the "prom video"). College freshman Ross brings home his roommate, Chandler Bing, who hates Thanksgiving. An insecure and overweight Monica takes a liking to him nevertheless, perhaps because of his Flock of Seagulls hairdo. But to Chandler, Monica is just Ross's "fat sister," and his comments are something she doesn't take lightly.

 

#105 The One with Ross's Sandwich (Dec 10, 1998)

Ross loses it when someone eats his sandwich at work; keeping up appearances for Monica and Chandler makes Joey look bad; Phoebe and Rachel take a lit class.

 

#106 The One with the Inappropriate Sister (Dec 17, 1998)

Danny's close relationship with his sister  bothers Rachel; Ross urges Joey to write a script; Phoebe collects for holiday charity on a street corner.

 

#107 The One with all the Resolutions (Jan 7, 1999)

Monica and Chandler's romance is at the heart of this fun episode. The episode revolves around the pals' New Year's resolutions, specifically Rachel's pledge to stop gossiping. That, of course, is immediately tested when she figures out that Monica and Chandler are an item. Meanwhile, Chandler promises to stop making fun of his friends; and Ross's decision to do something new every day somehow translates into a dating calamity involving his groovy new leather pants. Finally, Joey tries to learn guitar - the Phoebe way.

 

#108 The One with Chandler's Work Laugh (Jan 21, 1999)

Monica meets "Work Chandler," and Ross gets together with Janice.

 

#109 The One with Joey's Bag (Feb 4, 1999)

Phoebe meets Frank Sr. at her grandma's funeral; Joey gets attached to a bag that's like a purse.

 

#110 The One where Everybody Finds Out (Feb 11, 1999)

Phoebe gets an eyeful of the happy couple from the window of the Ugly Naked Guy's apartment - which Ross intends to rent. So while Ross pursues the apartment, the others try to figure out how they can exploit their shared knowledge. And Phoebe starts the "fun" by pretending to come on to Chandler.

 

#111 The One with the Girl who Hits Joey (Feb 18, 1999)

Could marriage be in the cards for Monica and Chandler? While it isn't out of the question, Chandler reacts to a discussion of it by freaking out about the possibility of commitment. Monica, of course, responds to that by not speaking to him. Meanwhile, Ross moves into a new apartment, where he promptly alienates his neighbors by refusing to contribute to the retirement gift for the building handyman; and Joey's pint-size new girlfriend packs a playful - but painful - punch.

 

#112 The One with the Cop (Feb 25, 1999)

Phoebe finds a police badge; Joey has a dream about Monica; Rachel helps Ross move his new couch.

 

#113 The One with Rachel's Inadvertent Kiss (Mar 18, 1999)

Rachel makes an awkward move during a job interview.

 

#114 The One where Rachel Smokes (Apr 8, 1999)

Rachel takes up smoking for work reasons; Joey angles into an audition involving Ross's son, Ben.

It isn't until the end of the opener that it's revealed, and even then, mum's the word about any potential daddy. Meanwhile, the reception becomes an affair to remember as Chandler tries — and fails — to dance in his rented shoes, and Joey delivers an overly emotional best-man speech to wow a director on the guest list.

The mystery surrounding the paternity of Rachel's baby is finally solved (sort of) in an episode directed by David Schwimmer. Of all people, it's Phoebe who cracks the case. Convinced she knows the garment's owner, Phoebe sets up a surprise meeting between her expectant friend and the unsuspecting daddy. Meanwhile, Joey still thinks Phoebe is the one with child, so he makes Miss Buffay a sweetly romantic offer she finds surprisingly hard to refuse.

But their unlikely pairing may not play out after he bumps into his future sister-in-law at Monica's costume party, where Pheebs gets the distinct impression that poor Eric is a dead man walking into a marriage trap set by her sneaky sibling. Meanwhile, Rachel's maternal instincts are put to the test by a batch of tricky trick-or-treaters.
