The phone in the kitchen jangled loudly. Quickly, Elizabeth turned off the sink and wiped her hands on a towel nearby. She picked up the portable phone, sitting down upon the wooden stool, which Lila had just vacated.
Hello? she inquired.
Hey Liz! It was Brian. Elizabeth breathed a sigh of relief. She was secretly relieved that it wasnt AJ. Every time she talked with AJ, it became more obvious to her. Their relationship wasnt working out. It never would.
Whats up? Wheres Nick? she asked.
Hes unpacking. Hes excited to see you guys again. Well be there in about
half an hour. Brian said.
Thats great. I cant wait to see Nick again, Elizabeth said with enthusiasm.
See you soon. AJ said he loves you, Brian added.
Elizabeth felt a tug at her heart. Yeah me too, Elizabeth said with false sincerity. She hung up the phone in a daze as she thought about AJ. When the two had started going out, Elizabeth had been head over heels in love with him. As the newness of their relationship wore off, the feeling disappeared. Now, she felt that she was just going through the motions. AJs callous attitude towards their relationship bothered her. She knew he cared about her, but it wasnt enough. She wanted more and AJ just couldnt give it to her.
Who was that on the phone? Lila asked eagerly. Was it Brian?
Elizabeth nodded The guys will be over in about half an hour. Nicks unpacking a little before they come.
So, have we decided what were gonna do today? Jessica asked. She wasnt really feeling up to a daylong excursion somewhere. I just want to be alone today.
I think were just going to hang around here for a while. I dont think the guys have anything in mind, Lila replied glancing over at Elizabeth for confirmation.
Elizabeth's attention was focused on the floor. Her finger was toying with a strand of her short brown hair. She had a distant far away look in her muddy brown eyes. The sort of look that she usually got whenever she was preoccupied with something.
Jessica immediately noticed something was wrong. She eyed her friend with concern. Liz. Whats wrong? What are you thinking about?
Elizabeth looked up her eyes bright. I was just thinking about AJ, she replied exhaling loudly.
Are you guys having problems? Jessica asked gently. She was silently glad for the diversion. Maybe this would take her mind off of her own problems for a while.
I remember you saying a few days ago that you werent sure where your relationship was headed. Are you still feeling insecure? Lila asked with concern. She placed her perfectly manicured hand on her friends knee. Let it out, she coaxed gently.
I know I care about AJ a lot. Im beginning to think that Im attracted to him solely on a physical level though. Emotionally, the bond is broken. Theres no passion or fire in our relationship like there used to be when we first started out. I want that. I need that. I think Im beginning to realize that AJ and I will never have that in our relationship, Elizabeth sighed.
All relationships are like that at first. When you start going out, you feel like youre the only two people in the world. After you adjust to each other, your relationship changes. Your relationship has probably grown in so many other ways since you two started dating, Jessica said quietly.
I used to feel like that. AJ was the only one for me. I mean, he really understood me and he still does, Elizabeth said. Elizabeth had so much creative energy that some people had a hard time accepting it. AJ understood her because he possessed the same energy as she did. That was one of the things that had brought the two closer in the first place.
Maybe you should talk to AJ about it. Let him know how you feel," Lila suggested.
The problem is I dont know how I feel. There are so many things about AJ that attract him to me. On the other hand, there are so many things that make me certain we shouldnt be together.
Lila enveloped her friend in a warm hug. I think you should give it some time before you make a decision. Were here if you need us, Lila said squeezing Elizabeths arm.
Im just so scared and confused. I dont want to loose AJs friendship. Im not sure if I can go through the pain of losing him, Elizabeth said as tears welled up in her eyes.
Jessica reached for her friends hand. I know exactly what you mean. Its hard to let go of someone that you once thought you loved. Someone that you trusted with all your heart only to end up being hurt and alone in the end, Jessica said bitterly as hot tears stung at her eyes. Lila and Elizabeth exchanged knowing looks. They both knew that Jessica was speaking about her own experience with Justin. She had been hurt badly. She was having a hard time getting over him despite all that he had done to her.
Elizabeth squeezed Jessicas hand tightly. She opened her mouth to console her friend just as the doorbell rang. The guys had arrived. Well continue this later Jess. Hes out of your life. He cant hurt you anymore, Elizabeth said softly.
I know it must be hard for you Jess. You have to try to put it behind you. Lets go open the door, Lila said in an attempt to brighten Jessicas mood.
You guys go ahead. Ill be there in a second, Jessica said quickly. The girls left her alone to go answer the door. Why cant I put it behind me? He hurt me so badly. Jessica reached for a tissue. She dabbed at her eyes. She didnt want the guys to see her like this. She repeated Elizabeths words silently to herself. Hes out of your life. He cant hurt you anymore. Hes out of your life
Lila and Elizabeth rushed to the door excitedly. They threw the door open. Nick! they both exclaimed in unison. Elizabeth was the first to welcome Nick to town and give him a hug. We missed you, she said smiling. Looks like Long Beach treated you well, Lila said giving Nick a kiss on the cheek. Youre not looking so bad yourself, he returned with a grin. As the girls ushered Nick inside, Lila studied him carefully. He had only grown better looking since the last time they had seen him. He had always been one of the best looking guys at school. Because of his good looks and charming personality Nick had always been romantically intertwined with someone or the other. Lila stood back from the action. Brian came up behind Lila and wrapped his arms around her slender waist kissing her neck. Hows my baby? Brian asked running a hand through Lilas hair. Lila kissed him back in answer to his question. Wheres Jess? Brian asked looking around noticing she was missing in action. Lila sighed, whispering Shes in the kitchen. Shes really preoccupied today. She doesnt want to talk about it though, Lila let out an exasperated sigh. I just wish shed let us help her so that she can put all this behind her once and for all. Shell open up in time. Its been almost a year now. She has to let it go sooner or later, Brian assured her giving her a kiss on her nose. Hey guys! Wheres Jess? Doesnt she want to welcome me home? Nick asked in mock sadness. Youll have to give her a break today. Shes feeling a little under the weather, Elizabeth supplied covering for her friend. Where is she? Can I go see her? Nick asked with concern. Go ahead. Shes in the kitchen. Just turn left. Nick set off towards the kitchen. He really wanted to see Jessica. He had secretly always had a crush on Jessica but had never pursued her because she had been dating Justin. Jessica had made it clear that Justin was the only guy for her. Nick had sadly resigned to the fact that they would never be anything more than friends. He turned left walking into the kitchen. He saw Jessica sitting alone on a wooden stool. Her back was to him. He immediately recognized her slender frame and gorgeous blonde locks. He made his way over to her. Hey stranger, Nick said softly. Jessica, startled, whipped around to face him. She came face to face with the most gorgeous set of blue eyes she had ever seen. Nick held her gaze for what felt like an eternity. His eyes were so beautiful she could stare that them forever. They were the same colour of the bright California sky on a clear day. Jessica could feel herself drowning in the depths of them. Nicks gaze was so piercing it was almost like he was looking into her soul. His eyes were so honest and trusting. She broke away from Nicks gaze quickly, blushing as she looked at the floor. She looked up and realized Nick was still eyeing her intensely. There was an uncomfortable silence, as neither of the two knew what to say. Its been a long time Nick. Weve all missed you Jessica said trying to start up conversation. Yeah, me too. Nick replied with a smile. You dont know how much. Its so great to see you again, Jessica said revealing a row of perfect teeth as she smiled. The initial feeling of awkwardness had worn off between the two. Youre looking great. University has been good to you, Nick said with smile. Jessica smiled awkwardly unsure of what to say next. She had to admit that Nick looked great too. He had gotten even better looking since the last time they had seen one another. Are you feeling better? Liz said you were a bit under the weather, Nick asked with concern. Jessica looked at Nick with a confused expression. Before Nick detected her surprise, she realized that Elizabeth had been covering for her. Yeah. Im feeling much better now, she responded. For the first time in months, its actually true, Jessica mused to herself.
