The following is my written record of what I did in Chile. I have added some comments to correct early misconceptions, horrible spanish, and maybe an occassional insight. Those are in brackets {}. There are also some corrections in parentasis. There have been some things changed or omitted.

16/06/03 Lunes - 12pm. I have been up for an hour, and I have finished breakfast. Instant coffee, fresh OJ, y pan tostado con cheese y jam�n. I can't stress enough how nice the family is. Last night fuimos a la casa de sus amigos. It was someone's cumplea�os, he turned 14 I believe. He was very nice and his sister, Mar�a Jos� invited me to the discotec. I was too tired - I slept from 10 to 10! But she was pretty (but a smoker) and her friend was nice too. Today is a holiday in Chile y no hay clases o trabajo. But I am going to study my 501 spanish verbs book to try and help the learning process. I feel like I miss so much from not understanding conversation, and I get frustrated. They don't show it, but I think the family expected a better spanish speaker than they got. I feel bad for that, but my desire is to get to the point where we can converse on a small scale at least. If they were able to speak much english, I don't think I would be forced to learn. I like writing cursive f's.

17/06/03 Martes a la 3pm. �sta ma�ana yo fui a la universidad. I arrived at 9am and had another breakfast con todos los estudiantes intercambios. Hay veinte. Hace mucho fr�o dentro los edificios. They don't heat their buildings like we do, and everyone wears longs sleeves plus jackets. We took an exam to test nuestros niveles de espa�ol. It was dif�cil y ten�a pensar mucho en las preguntas. Despues de eso, regres� a casa a las doce y media. I can't wait to start regular classes and become immersed in the language. By tomorrow this time I will only want to speak english! This gets very tiring and frustrating when I don't understand! Pero est� bien...despues unos minutos quiero aprender m�s. I have ideas about what the subject of conversation is, but perdo los detalles. It is difficult to figure out whow much things cost, but el micro vale 330P which is a little more than $.50. {actually it's pretty much .50 exactly} Clothes and shoes appear m�s barato. Last night fuimos a la casa de Eduardo's hermano. {Bad spanish...I think I didn't want to write correctly.} El tiene dos hijos un hijo y una hija. Hot dogs they eat with tomatos, mayonaise, y some other greenish sort of thing. Lechuga? {Mashed up avocado...they use it almost whenever they eat bread}

18/06/03 6:00PM Mi�rcoles. Las clases emezaron {empezaron} hoy. Por el ex�men yo gan� tantos puntos que puedo tocar {tomar} las clases advanzados por el consejo de Professora Pearson. La literatura no me gusta...es tanto dif�cil. {Actually preferred that class in the end.} La gram�atica y cultura me gusta m�s. A m�, no quiero aprender m�s que la cultura y lengua. Ahora estoy estudiando en una biblioteca amarillo y azule se llma "gato algo." Es bueno. Hay una buena vista de la ciudad. Anoche Mar�a Jos� y yo fuimos a su baile. Es un biale afre. Era muy interesante y me gusta mucho. Me dijo que le gusta porque es muy fuerte! Soy de acuerdo. Ella es muy simp�tica. {But the second to last week I was there, she didn't say hello or anything to me or my mom when we were walking to buy bread. I didn't even see her.} Una cosa es dif�cil acostumbrarme es que Marisol {my host mom} hace todos los quehaceres de la casa. Todos! Penso {Pienso} en que es su identidad. Ella cuida o guara la casa mientras su esposo trabaja y Alex {host brother} atienda el colegio. Es una diferencia cultural. {Is it?} Anoche antes de acostarme pensaba de despedirme en agosto. Me sient� {sent�} triste. Ya la amo la familia. Son muy bue�os...como todos aspiran ser.... Ahora estudio la poes�a. Creo que es un{a} buen{a} manera de aprender una lengua...tambien hay un trasludci�n en el otro pag�na {p�gina} :) N se reuno con los alumnos mucho...no vien� {vine} a Chile buscar amigos. Pero ellos son buenos y simp�ticos. Me gustan.

I love this peom. It is a shot at Pinochet, and roughly translated it says: If I were the president of Chile I would not delay to begin to declare war on Bolivia, act which would be followed by shooting myself in the temple. Isn't that just Daam Gud????

21/06/03 S�bado 12:30. Que pas� que pas�...Pierd� {Perd�} dos dias de adventuras! Jueves, los alumnos y yo fuimos por el tur en barco del puerto. Fue bien. Saquemos unas fotos y un hombre nos explic� las vistas. Despues yo regres� a casa con el alumno se llama Steven. El es de SanFranscisco y habla como un homosexual. {He fit a lot of my stereotypes} No es importa. {Horrible spanish...no me importa or no tiene importancia} Cuando camin�bamos, un grupo de chicos nos dijerson cosas pero yo no las oy�. Sten me dijo que oy� la palabra pico! Bueno est� bien...nada pas�. Los profesores son m�s faciles entender. Espero que eso significa que yo aprendo mucho! Por la clase literatura necestamos leer un libro de espa�ol. {Libro espanol or un libro escrito por espanol...come on pete} Ser� dificil pero el vendedor y mi pap� me recomendi� un libro corto. Est� muy bien! Tambien compr� un otro libro de cien sonetos de amor. Los compr� en el mall de Vi�a (del Mar). Es muy grande. Hay un supermercado que tiene casi setenta cajeros! Setenta! Es incre�ble. Tambien mi familia me ense�aron las vistas. Era(n) muy bonitas. Comimos helado muy rico mas tanto que (back home). A m� todo es bonito. Las casa los cerros los calles la genta la manera de interaci�n. Todo es bonito.
