Magnetic Mayhem

by Stephen Thomson

The following directions are for creating Magnetic storage trays for you A Sky Full of Ships fleets.

You will need:

  • Games Workshop small Flying bases
  • 7/16 Washers
  • Strip Magnet w/adhesive on one side
  • Carrying case (3700 series Plano trays, Etc)
  • Scissors, file, glue, etc

Step One

Choose which post to use and assemble the base as normal

Now for the Washer.  You may notice that there are ridges around the edges of  the washer. File these down then score the surface of the washer  to improve the glue's hold.

Now glue the washer to the base and hold it tightly for a few seconds.

Generally, I finish the base off with a coat of Krylon Interior/Exterior Ultra-Flat Black spray paint. The bases may be clear, but the reflect the light. The flat back coat of paint makes the base much less noticeable.

Step Two

Now it is time to lay the magnetic striping in our Plano 3700 series Tray. the inside of the trays are around 13 1/2" long, so you will want to cut your magnetic strips to about 13 3/8" .  Then just peel and stick.  Be sure to press on the strip firmly, and hold the ends down for several seconds that they won't curl up in the future.

For heavier ships, such as the Fleet action Vree Xill battle Saucer, use 2 strips side by side.

3700 trays come in several depths; 1", 2", 3", etc.  Ships like Battlefleet Gothic cruisers will generally only fit in the larger trays, Assuming that they are on the small flight bases. I unfortunately have the one BFG Fleet that is too wide for any Plano trays, the Demiurg. For ships this big,  lay the magnetic striping in The top section of a Plano Tackle Box.  Then you can also slide 3 1" trays into the front section and not have to worry about you fleets sliding around!

Final Notes

For the large Flying bases, 7/8" washers will fit nicely, and give the  base a VERY solid weight to keep it from falling over.

you can see beside that my Earthforce fleet does not slide!

I (steve) personally have 15 fleets based like this, and I haven't had a ship break since I rebased my them.
