September 15, 2006: Restaurant Review: Two East Main
I joined a friend for Lunch at Two East Main today in downtown Champaign. It was a gorgeous Friday afternoon and we chose to dine outside. The table was right up against the fence on the corner of Neil and Main. It was clean and eating outside was pleasant--except when an MTD city bus rumbled by. Then it was too loud to hear anything my companion was saying.

She ordered the Friday special--a fish sandwich--with a side of onion rings and a lemonade. I ordered the mushroom and Swiss burger with a side of fries and an iced tea.

Our waitress was very pleasant and attentive. She promptly refilled my friend's lemonade every time it was empty. I had to ask once to get a tea refill, but that was okay. We each ended up with 3 refills in the time we sat there catching up.

My friend's fish sandwich was HUGE. She cut it in half and took about 5 inches of sandwich home. It was served on a french baguette. Her onion rings looked crispy.

My burger was very tasty. It was a decent size, but not so huge that I couldn't get my mouth around it. The cheese and the mushrooms tasted fresh and the whole thing had a nice grilled flavor. The fries were the thin, shoestring variety. They were appropriately crispy. Both our sandwiches were served in a basket on a red napkin--perfectly fitting for the casual atmosphere.

We lingered over the meal because we hadn't seen each other in a while. We never felt rushed or as if they were trying to turn the table.

My burger, fries, and tea were $8. Her meal was about the same.

Other items on the menu included a pastrami Reuben, salads (which the waitress highly recommended), and desserts--a nice, basic American menu. We'll have to go back to try other dishes.
