November 23, 2007--Movie Review: Enchanted
If you have a love-hate relationship with the Disney Princesses, Enchanted may be just the movie for you. The movie starts in a typical Disney animated world where the insipid Giselle longs only for "true love's kiss". Any modern girl worth her salt will commence eye rolling and gagging immediately.

But Enchanted asks "what if"? What if "happily ever after" is a myth? What if you send hapless Giselle (Amy Adams) to a place that is as far from "once upon a time" as possible--modern day New York City? What if Giselle meets up with a jaded divorce lawyer (Patrick Dempsey), who doesn't believe in fairy tales, and his charming daughter? What if the prince, the wicked queen, her evil minion, and a chipmunk sidekick all end up following Giselle to New York? Suddenly, New York is going to seem a little crowded!

Poking gentle fun at its own Princess Plot Lines, Disney winks at the whole "girl is rescued by handsome prince" storyline in a movie that is part parody and part homage. The movie suffers a tad from "best bits in the trailer"-itis. However, Unless you are completely cynical, you will enjoy this fluffy, but fun, romp and so will your kids.

Bonus: Play "name the movie the scene is reminiscent of". We spotted: Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella, Little Mermaid, King Kong (OK, not Disney, but still), and a few others.

Enchanted is rated PG and is 107 minutes. Three Stars.
