I met a friend for lunch at
Jupiter's this week. I have never been to this bar/pool hall/pizzeria before. The restaurant is still smoke free (despite the recent overturning of the smoking ban by the Champaign Council) although there are a few outdoor tables where smoking is allowed. Jupiter's is located in a unassuming store front at 39 E. Main Street in downtown Champaign. There is a handy public parking lot just a few steps away (on the NE side of Main).
The atmosphere is definitely bar-like. There are a few booths upfront, the bar, and then a few more bar tables and booths. The main part of the room is filled with pool tables. One wall is brick and the ceiling is painted tin. The lights are kept dim and the furnishings are dark--all of this adding to the pub feel.
My friend said Jupiter's was known for their pizza and she wasn't kidding. I had a personal 9" pizza with mushrooms and artichoke hearts. The toppings were plentiful, the crust was crispy, and the pizza was really good--and more than enough for one person. My pizza and an iced tea were $8.
If you are into pool, you can rent a table for $6 an hour in the evening--and they prorate if you play less than that. They even have leagues you can join if you are over 21. On Tuesdays, pool is $3 an hour--and pool is free at lunchtime every day if you order pizza.
My family likes to play pool together and they like pizza, so we'll go back. I think older kids would do fine in the atmosphere, but younger kids would be out of place.
