April 15, 2007: Restaurant Review--Boston Pizza
Today the family tried the new Boston Pizza, which is located on North Prospect in Champaign in the Meijer's parking lot. When we arrived, the greeter asked if wanted restaurant or lounge. We waited on the restaurant. The lounge also had tables and booths, but that side was dominated by a large bar, many televisions, and sports themed decor. The restaurant side still had a couple of TVs, but more of an artsy feel to the decor.

We were told the wait would be about 15 minutes and they gave us a pager shaped like a slice of pizza. There wasn't enough seating for the waiting area and what seating there was is spread out so we did not sit together while we waited. We took the time to look over both the kids' and regular menus.

The wait ended up being a little over 20 minutes. They seated us in a comfortable booth. The woman who seated us was friendly and made a couple of food recommendations and seemed to know the menu well.

Our actual waitperson was a little more scatterbrained, but still friendly. Still we had some trouble ordering. She took our drink order first. Twin B tried to order lemonade. The waitperson tells us that they are out of lemonade. She offers a Serria Mist with cherry juice. Twin B says she'll try that. My husband orders a Pepsi. Twin A orders a diet Pepsi. I order a water.

The wait person brings the drinks. The Pepsi is in the kids' cup; the diet in a regular glass. No worries, husband and son switch. Husband claims to be happy to get the "bendy" straw.

Next we order dinner. Twin A wants to order the "Team" appetizer. It looks like it will feed a party of 8. We say no. Twin A is not happy. Twin B orders lasagna. Twin A orders half a rack of BBQ ribs. Husband orders Hawaiian pizza. I order a specialty pizza with artichoke hearts and mushrooms.

About 15 minutes later, our waitperson tells us that unfortunately, they ran out of ribs just before Twin A's order went in, but the rest of our food is ready. Twin A needs to order something else, but he won't be served at the same time as us.  I ask how this happened because we should have been told of the need to exchange at the time our order started to cook, not when it was ready to be served. Waitperson shrugs.

Twin A orders BBQ chicken pizza off the kids menu, but he is not happy about it. Waitperson is confused about what comes with it and whether you can order additional toppings. Waitperson says she will bring a salad with the rest of our food. OK. I ask for a diet Pepsi with my food.

Waitperson goes to put in new order and bring out the rest of the food. Twin B gets a small piece of lasagna and a small salad. She says it is "okay". Husband and I both find our pizzas to be very tasty. Twin A's pizza finally comes. He doesn't like it because BBQ chicken pizza means the pizza had BBQ sauce not tomato sauce with pieces of BBQ chicken on it. It also comes smothered in onions, which is not explained on the kids' menu. Waitperson did not tell us either when we had asked. Twin A is still not happy.

Waitperson brings refill for Twin A's diet Pepsi, but no diet Pepsi for me. Husband asks for Pepsi refill. Waitperson goes away and comes back to ask how the food is. Lightbulb goes off in Waitperson's head. Waitperson remembers husband asked for a refill! Waitperson goes away again and comes back with Pepsi. Waitperson never remembered to bring me a diet Pepsi.

Waitperson returns and asks if we want to try a dessert. We had seen a tempting looking dessert tray in the front of the restaurant. The desserts included tiramisu, Boston creme pie, cheesecake, brownie sundae, and so on. The desserts were all in the 6 to 7 dollar range and we decided not to chance another screw up. We declined dessert but asked for a box for the remaining BBQ chicken pizza.

Waitperson brings bill and box. The restaurant is out of lids for the to-go boxes. Waitperson brings sheet of tin foil. Husband and I shake our heads at each other.

I check our bill. The kids' drinks are included in the kids' meals, but we have been charged for them. The waitperson comes back and I point out the discrepancy. The waitperson goes away and comes back with a new check. Waitperson also brings a coupon for a free individual pizza to use on our next visit because we had so many "difficulties".

Dinner for two adults and two kids was $28 before tip.

Bottomline: we would try Boston Pizza again as the pizza was very good. I think we'll wait until the store has been open a while and the kinks have been worked out--including the multiple items that were unavailable and the green Waitperson. I think the kids would choose to order off the adult menu too. One last note, the family behind us did order the "Team" appetizer. It looked good and had a nice variety, but as suspected it was too big for a single family. They took half of it home in a to go box with an actual lid.
