January 3, 2007: Movie Review--The Pursuit of Happyness
Will Smith stars in The Pursuit of Happyness a movie based on the real life of Chris Gardner. Gardner is down on his luck: his marriage is on the rocks, his money is running out, his job is a dead end. Chris decides to go for a competitive internship at a financial company. There is only one problem--the internship is not a paying one. Chris takes the risk, but he and his son end up homeless.
It is somewhat of a departure from Will Smith's other movie roles--which feature his humor--but Smith handles the dramatic role well. Smith's real life son, Jaden, portrays his onscreen son. It's the screen debut for Jaden, but he proves the acting genes did not skip a generation. Jaden has some of the funniest lines in the movie and some of the more touching scenes.
The movie is ultimately uplifting and inspiring. Both my husband and I enjoyed it. Our 11 year old twins deemed it "okay." I think they were expecting more of Will Smith's Fresh Prince persona. They were also disturbed by some of the scenes involving the homelessness of Chris and his son. I think slightly older kids would have really appreciated it.
1 hour 56 minutes; rated PG13; now playing; recommended for: families with older kids able to deal with more adult themes. For parents deciding about whether to take kids, there is one use of the "F" word; it is used in a funny way.
