September 9, 2006: Movie Review--Invincible

Invincible is the story of Vince Papale, an everyman from Philadelphia who loses his wife and his job as a teacher. The new coach of the Philadelphia Eagles football team, Dick Vermeil, holds open try outs for the team. Huge Eagles' fan, Vince, is convinced to try out. Surprise! He makes the team. Will he get to keep his spot? Will he get his life together?

The movie is typical Disney formulaic sports biopic. (Think The Rookie, Remember the Titans, etc.) But Disney does this type of film very well. I took my son (age 11), and we both enjoyed the movie. I'm not even a football fan, but Mark Wahlberg as Papale and Greg Kinnear as Vermeil turn in decent performances that make you care about the characters and overlook the obvious predictability of the film. The abrupt ending is a little disconcerting, but you won't be looking at your watch wondering if the movie is ever going to end (unlike some kids' movies).

104 minutes; rated PG; now playing; recommended for: families with kids that like sports and Philadelphia Eagles fans
