Internet Radio
A cup of hot tea next to the monitor, sandwiches on the pile of photocopies, handphone switched to vibrator-mode, notes in front of the keyboard, and a beautiful view outside detailing the intricate designs of old buildings turning off to the right at the end...what more can I ask for while spending long days in front of a computer writing up gobblygook language better known as thesis?

"Can you guys shut up?  I'm trying to concentrate!"  is the more-direct request implied in my long stare at the trio blabbermouth...Don't they read the sign that says,"maintain peace and quite in the computer rooms."?  Not to mention over-sized women who are fashion conscious (but not social) and causing the thumping sounds with their heeled shoes!

Thank God for internet radios.  This feature of the Internet is now indispensible, especially for someone looking for peace and quiet in a public computer facility room.

What is it?

Basically, it's a site that plays music on the internet.  Some of these sites provide free access, so that's one of the good parts.  Most of the stations are compatible with windows or other popular stream programmes, so you don't have to install them everytime you want to tune in.

The down side to it is that you have to keep up with hardware and version demands.  Pentium II at least and a sound card should be there in your computer, and an internet connection is definitely needed (otherwise why would they call it
internet radios!? duh!)
"Where can one tune in to?"

Well, for starters, you can check the good old media on the internet directory (usually at the top of the page).  When you choose "radio"  it will direct you to the genres and stations available.

Personally, I would choose the genre first to suit the music I want to hear.  For example, since I am into jazz and pop, I regularly choose the
MSN Smooth Jazz section.  It sets the mood into productive day rather than carried away with dance beats or lulled by a very slow pop numbers.

For some of the stations, you need to have an account (either e-mail or some sort).  So, make one!   But be sure you choose the free version or else you'll end up with bills coming in every month.

Sometimes you will see a station being listed more than once in the same group.  This is because the speeds are different.  So be sure to choose the closest to your computer and internetc capacity.

So after all that, sit back, plug in your earphone, start working and listen to Steve Oliver's "High Noon" or whatever your taste demands.

A Word of warning:

Always be aware of your neighbours!  Before you know it, they'll be the ones giving you that long disgusted look:  you're swivelling on the chair, thumping your foot to the beat and humming to the tune!
