This was the second year of this event and a number of changes were adopted. The major change was of the format. The male and female singles reamined but the team event was replaced with an open doubles event. The venue was moved from Potters to Great Yarmouth due to the poor quality of the lanes at Potters. It is anticipated that the competition will return to Potters for 2005.
The format for all the compettions was a round robin with a win bonus of 20 pins singles and 40 pins doubles, followed by a step ladder final.
Round Robin
The mens competition had 8 bowlers
mainly the usual faces with the exception of Austin Barrett from
Mark Scott finished 2nd and Tom Walsh 3rd .
The last two places were keenly fought throughout and only decided on the last game with Roger Smith missing out by 7 pins, the last two qualifiers being Clive Knowles and Bill McVake.
Austin Barrett competed well and won one of his round robin matches and he may be seen at future events.
The first match between Clive and Bill went to Bill as Clive struggled as he had most of the day. (160 v 191)
The next game saw the closest match of the stepladder between Tom and Bill with Tom edging out Bill on the last frame. (198 v 187)
The next game saw Tom edge out home favourite Mark Scott (184 v 172) and headed for a showdown with Alan Hanafin in a repeat of last years final.
However it was not as close this year with Tom running out a comfortable winner 181 to 149 to retain his title.
The ladies competition had 6 competitors with a new face of Laura Nutt. Again it was a round robin competition with the top 4 going into the stepladder final. It was even stevens all the way through, with no one bowler dominating. Everything was decided again on the last game. At the final tally there was only 6 pins between1st Francis McGregor and 3rd Pat Peverall. Julie Eason finished 2nd gaining most bonus points, Kate Currie being the 4th finalist. Newcomer Laura Nutt found the competition too tough and did not win any of her matches. Gill Taylor the only other bowler to miss out.
The first match in the final between Kate and Pat went Kate’s way as pat could not reproduce earlier form (153 v 90). Kate continued on her way against Julie winning 155 v 144. This led to an all Strathclyde final with Francis coming out on top 172 v 147.
This was the inaugural year for the doubles and after its
success it will remain as part of the Championships. Eight teams competed with new faces of Chris
Rumens/Martin Tangen representing
All the step ladder matches were close affairs with the result going to the last frame in all games. The first match saw Martin Evans/Geoff Beach lose out to Douglas Campbell/Bill McVake 310 v 302. They again triumphed over Ian Hands/Lee Franklin 354 v 331. Their run came to an end against Jon Greengrass/Paul Hunt who triumphed 358 v 327.
The final was another close affair but the
