Table Tennis Report – 2004 Games
Mixed Doubles
The holders for the past two years Cragg
/ Lang, Metropolitan Police faced Lythgoe / Woledge, Kent
Constabulary. The first set was won by the holders 11-3 and it looked like the
challengers would take the second set but a tremendous comeback saw Cragg/Lang
sneak it 12-10. The momentum was with the holders who comfortably won the match
11 – 6 in the third and made it three in a row. This feat was formally
recognised when they were awarded a certificate to commemorate this at the presentation
ceremony.
Mens Veteran Doubles
The Mens Doubles saw Dunne /
Harris, West Yorks face the holders Strettle /
Craighill, Greater Manchester Police. The first game was very close all the way
and you sensed whoever won it would go on to win the match. Strettle /
Craighill managed to pinch the first set 11-8 and despite leaving it late to
get back to 10-10 they win on to win the second and the final set 11-7 and take
the title.

Veteran Singles
The holder John Rankin,
Merseyside had to face the surprise package Tony Braddock, Cheshire. The first two games went to Rankin and
he seemed to be cruising in the third when Braddock playing inspired table
tennis took the game and continued the momentum into the fourth game. However a
tight fourth was sneaked by Rankin and his second successive Veterans singles
was won.
Mens Singles
The holder Rankin had to face Ian Ferguson, West Mids. in a repeat of the final
of 2002. The match was a topsy – turvey affair with Rankin winning the first
but then losing the next two games. A tightly won forth by Rankin set up a
concluding game. Unfortunately it was a low key game with Rankin winning 11-5
and winning the Mens Singles for the second year in a row.
