Team History
This is a team built on talent, skills, discipline, chemistry and heart...
1994- It all started in 1994, when Coach John and son Ryan met Coach Willy and son Doni while preparing for the 1994 Pormica Basketball Tournament in San Francisco.  The birth of the current San Francisco team was built based on Coach John and Coach Willy coaching the team, and with their sons Ryan and Doni as the nucleus to build around.  Team San Francisco did not win the 1994 Pormica Basketball Tournament, but Ryan and Doni, who were both still in Middle School, showed flashes of brilliance and great potential.

1995- Ivan joined the team in 1995.  Team San Francisco traveled to Los Angeles to play in the Pormica Basketball Tournament.  They lost to Lomalinda who were the defending Pormica Champions, and eventually won the Pormica tournament in Los Angeles.  The team lost, but gained a lot in experience and team chemistry.  Team San Francisco went on to win the Indonesian Independence Day Tournament.

1996- Irvan joined the team in 1996.  Calvin and Tym started coming around to the games and practices to support Team San Francisco.  They were way too young to join the team, but it was not hard to envision them as future players for Team San Francisco.  The team traveled to Sacramento to play in the Pormica Basketball Tournament where they would again meet Lomalinda.  This game became a double overtime classic in which both teams played hard and tough.  Both Ryan and Doni were knocked out of the game in regulation.  Ryan was knocked out by fouls, and Doni was knocked out of the game with fourteen stitches to his face.  The rest of the team played admirable in the two overtime periods without their two star players.  Player-Coach Willy, Ivan, and Irvan did their best to keep the game close against the perennial defending champs, Lomalinda.  Team San Francisco eventually lost by one point in double overtime to Lomalinda, but won the respect of opposing Indonesian Basketball Teams.  It was evident that Team San Francisco was on the verge of greatness.  Team San Francisco went on to win the Indonesian Independence Day Tournament.

1997- Robin joined the team in 1997.  Robin was the big man that Team San Francisco was lacking.  The Pormica Basketball Tournament was in San Diego.  Team San Francisco proved that their classic game versus Lomalinda was no fluke and won all their games by a big margin to become the new Pormica Basketball Tournament Champions.  Although they won, their victory was not without obstacle.  There was a lot of jealousy from some of the opposing teams which prevented star player Ryan from playing in some of the games.  They were obviously jealous of how good our team was, and said Ryan could not play because he was born here.  They did not let him play even though he was no doubt Indonesian, and even though his dad played in the very first Pormica.  They should have let him play and just admire how great a basketball player a fellow Indonesian was because he was in fact only a high school kid playing with much older players.  Politics should not play a role in Indonesian Basketball.  The Pormica Basketball Tournament was in fact founded to increase friendship among Indonesians, not to cause enemies.  By saying that Ryan could not play, showed the ugly side of Indonesian Basketball.  Pormica was founded to unite all Indonesians, but this action showed Indonesians discriminating against other Indonesians.

Team San Francisco won the Asian Basketball Association League Championship, and placed second in the Indonesian Independence Day Basketball Tournament in 1997.

1998- There was no Pormica or Indonesian Independence Day Basketball Tournament in 1998 because of the riots in Indonesia.  The riots in Indonesia and the actions against Team San Francisco in the 1997 Pormica Basektball Tournament in San Diego, showed the problems Indonesians have.  That problem is Indonesians discriminating against other Indonesians because of ethnicity and/or religion.  As Indonesians we have to learn to unite together.  Discrimination only causes problems.

Team San Francisco won the Inaugural Fresno Basketball Tournament.  They also successfully defended their championship in the Asian Basketball Association League, where they were known for averaging over 100 points per game.

1999- Tym and Nate joined the team in 1999.  Again no Pormica or Indonesian Independence Day Basketball Tournament because of the events in Indonesia.  Too bad there were no tournaments in 1998 and 1999 because Ryan and Doni were truly playing their best basketball during this time.

Team San Francisco defended their Championship in the Fresno Basketball Tournament and placed third in the Santa Monica Cup Tournament.

2000-
Bobby, Hendra, and Tone joined the team in 2000.  The Pormica Basketball Tournament was back, but revamped to be known as Pormisab.  The inaugural Pormisab was in Los Angeles.  Team San Francisco was excited about playing in the tournament and to finally get to defend their championship, but bad news came a week before the tournament.  Star Player Ryan tore ligaments in his right ankle.  Team San Francisco would have to defend their championship without their star player.  Doni decided to wear Ryan's number 23 to honor his backcourt mate since 1994.  Doni knew he had to step it up without Ryan in the lineup.  The first game was against Los Angeles.  Los Angeles had a lineup of three six footers and a half white half Indonesian player that had a lot of talent and skills.  The game was rough, but Team San Francisco won.  Team San Francisco eventually made it to the Championship game where they would face Los Angeles again.  Los Angeles did their best in intimidating Team San Francisco by putting down dunk after dunk during warmups.  Team San Francisco not only had to face the imposing lineup of Los Angeles, but also the pro-Los Angeles crowd.  The crowd was mostly against Team San Francisco.  The game was close throughout with both teams playing hard and alternating leads.  Doni with Ryan's number 23 on his back, knew he had to play one of his better games and he did.  He hit shot after improbable shot to keep his team in the game.  He also played Ryan-like defense to shut down the half white half Indonesian player.  Although Doni played a great game, he could not do it alone.  His teammates also played a great game.  The game was still up in the air till Player-Coach Willy hit a crucial shot to put Team San Francisco up in the lead for good.  After the buzzer sounded, Ryan was the first off the bench to celebrate with his teammates at midcourt.  It is still a mystery today of  how Ryan got to midcourt so quickly with torn ligaments and all.

2001-
The year 2001 was a disappointment. Team San Francisco got Ryan back from injury, but were out of shape and unprepared.  They failed to defend their Pormisab Championship in Fresno.  Team San Francisco did win the IFGF Basketball Tournament that year.

2002-
Calvin and Khalid joined the team in 2002.  Team San Francisco was eager to win back the Pormisab Championship in San Jose.  With great defense and team chemistry, they routed all their opponents to win back the Pormisab Championship.  Their performance showed why they are one of the best Indonesian Basketball Teams.

...
Team San Francisco is a team built on talent, skills, discipline, chemistry, and heart.  Doni, Ryan, Ivan, Irvan, Robin, Tym, Nate, Bobby, Hendra, Tone, Calvin, and Khalid led by Coaches John and Willy are what makes Team San Francisco one of the best Indonesian Basketball Teams.  With the great combination of Coach John's hard nose discipline pressure defense, Coach Willy's run and gun offense, and the talent of the players...Team San Francisco looks forward to winning more championships in years to come.  Team San Francisco is a Team of Excellence.
