| Hmm.. where do we start.. well when Mike, Josh and cory were twelve years old and just learning their instruments they decided to start a band. why? because there is absolutly nothing else to do in Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia. That band consisted of Mike strumming G in the corner on an old acoustic guitar, Josh playing the notes A, D and E on an acoustic guitar with a pickup hooked into a 10 watt matrix amp... and cory, well i suppose he was at home by himself playing his peavy raptor, at that time he was not playing with Mike and Josh. The other members were Murray, playing drums on an old set of linko drums which consisted of a hi hat, a snare, a bass drum, a rack tom, and a metal pole sticking out of the top of the bass drum. topping this pole was a piece of what looked like beatin up sheet metal, which of course was the crash cymbal. Oh and tommy, he actually had an electric guitar. So that band later formed into a band called elysium featuring. Cory Auger singing, Josh Gillard playing guitar, Mike Dorton playing guitar, Chris Gillis playing bass and Murray Ollerhead playing drums (of course we all had better gear by this time) Elysium played some shows and recorded a 12 song cd at the mullet in halifax. Two months later they realized that they sucked and the bands demise came very shortly afterword. Then in May of 98' Cory, Mike and Josh would start a new band, where by cory would sing and play guitar, mike would play drums, and josh would play guitar. soon josh would have a revelation and name the band The Lampshades. So now all they needed was a bass player, Matt Enders was first choice, but didn't work out very early on, one day in fact. So Danny Fader was next to be asked and he worked out well. for a time.. After kicking danny out the trio asked Colin MacLean to hold the ropes for a while, this venture also turned out to be a short lived one. So their absolute last resort was to reluctantly ask Chris Merrill, (AKA: Merrill) a long time friend to learn their songs and play some bass. So as it goes now, they switch around their insruments every now and then, usually depending on who shows up for the jams, and who writes the songs. Josh writes most of the songs, so when he writes a song or him and mike colaborate we'd have cory vox/guitar. josh guitar. mike drums. merrill bass. but when mike writes a song: josh plays drums and mike plays guitar, and sometimes cory will play bass and merrill will play guitar. so now you know! The Lampshades music is different with each song.. you could kinda think of it this way; instead of expressing ourselves in the confines of a particular genre.. when expressing a feeling we choose a genre best suited for that feeling... now, although we don't switch between any real genres, it's still the same sort of principle. every song sounds like a lampshade song but not in the way that every green day song sounded the same. yeah, we thought too far into it. |
