Winter Meeting of the 11th The 11th winter meeting was held at Bruce Kolb’s home on Saturday, January 17, 2004. In attendance were Phil McClure, Mike Beck, Russell McClure, Tim Beckman, Gary Schneider, Bret Caldwell, Steve Coffman, and Aaron Coffman. There was plenty of food and we had a great discussion about the 2004 schedule. We decided that we would vote on the events up to and including May of 2004. The events we are considering for the remainder of the reenacting year will be voted on at the camp of instruction after more information is made available. |
11th Indiana Camp of Instruction: On March 27 and 28 the Civil War comes to Camp Morton. The 11th Indiana Regiment of Zouaves is looking forward to holding its camp of instruction on the original site of Camp Morton (19th and Alabama). At the beginning of the Civil War, Lew Wallace (author of Ben Hur) was chosen by Governor Morton to be Adjutant General. One of Wallace’s jobs as Adjutant General was to locate a training camp for new volunteers. Wallace chose a 36 acre tract, which was formerly owned by Indianapolis’s first mayor Samuel Henderson, as the new training camp for troops. The property had also served as the Indiana State Fairgrounds. By April of 1861 the camp had shelter for 6,000 men. There were actually several camps located throughout downtown Indianapolis. The new training camp was named Camp Morton in honor of the Governor. 11th Treasury Principal:

Start of the New Year As we begin another year of reenacting I would like everyone to think about last year and choose one thing that they would like to personally improve this year. It could be your uniform, first person impression, or whatever you feel would add to your reenacting experience. Chances are it will enhance the company as a whole. If you have any suggestions for the web page, please let Tim know. Items for the Newsletter Please, Please, Please send me articles to include in the newsletter. I have been writing the newsletter for 3 years now and would like to encourage others to get involved. It is the company’s newsletter and everyone can contribute.
