The Red Wolf

(Canis rufus)

The red wolf almost reached the point of extinction. In the 1970s, there were fewer than one hundred left in the world. Researchers and biologists captured every red wolf they could, and took them to a breeding facility. They took extra careful precautions while breeding them. In 1987, eight red wolves were released in North Carolina's Alligator Ricer National Wildlife Refuge. These wolves that were released wear radio tracking collars. THis way the researchers can keep track of the wolves. Some scientists believe that red wolves are mixtures between the wolf and the coyote.
