Fifty Years of India's Independence
Today India is a very vibrant and the largest democracy of the world. People of thousand of casts, speaking two dozen official languages, practicing hundreds of religions, following a million Gods are bound by a common thread called India. India is one of the very few countries which obtained independence during the Second World War, who were able to retain democratic system. Control of India by European Powers and its subsequent freedom struggle is a long story. Our freedom struggle was led by Mahatma Gandhi, apostle of peace, who showed the path of non violence and civil disobedience against British aggression. Thousands of people were killed, maimed and mercilessly beaten by the British, but they stuck to peaceful protests and didn't took the arms. �
