Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das (1870-1925)
Patriot, lawyer and parliamentarian, Chittaranjan Das is better known as "Deshabandhu" , Friend of the Country. He was the leading figure in Bengal during the Non-Co-operation Movement.
Born on 5  November 1870 in Calcutta, he belonged to an upper middle-class family of Telirbagh, in Dacca district. He was a barrister who had entered the political arena by trying to save urobindo Ghosh  from the hangman's noose when he got implicated in the Alipore Bomb Conspiracy Case. His wit and powerful handling of the case was the reason behind Aurobindo's acquittal.
An advocate of communal harmony and Hindu-Muslim unity, Daseffected, in 1923, the Bengal Pact between the Hindus and Muslims of Bengal, though opposed by a section of the Congress. He initiated the ban on British clothes. He himself set an example by burning his own European clothes and taking up 'desi' Khadi clothes. With Motilal Nehru, he founded the Swaraj Party to express his non-moderate opinions. Known to be the mentor and guru of Shubhash Chandra Bose, the imperialistic British administration tried to cool his heels many a times but could not tame his iron resolution and confidence.
He brought out a paper called "Forward"  and later changed its name to Liberty to fight the British Raj. When the Calcutta Corporation was formed, he became its first Mayor in 1924. Netaji worked under him as Commissioner. He presided over the Gaya session of the Indian National Congress.
Deshabandhu wanted Swaraj for the masses, not for the classes. He believed in non-violent and constitutional methods for the realisation of the national independence. In the economic field, Das stressed the need for constructive work in villages. He was a champion of national education and vernacular medium. He also made his mark as a poet and an essayist. He supported women's education, widow re-marriage and intercaste marriage. His political life was plagued with ill health. He died on 16th June 1925. Though his legacy was carried rightly by Shubhash Chandra Bose, his absence was felt in each step on the way to a revolution
