Sally Calle’s paper helped us greatly. We learned a lot about the downsides of the LBUSD experiment. It gave us an idea of how uniforms may not be right, and it helped us develop pros and cons. It showed us different ways to improve a school environment without using uniforms. This sight really helped us!
Interview with Michael Burger:
This interview helped us greatly. It helped us see a principal’s view of the subject. He thought it was basically the brains behind the student. If the student had motivation to do well, he/she would, no matter what he/she was wearing.
Interview with Mrs. Calle:
Ms. Calle was definitely for school uniforms. Her opinion was much different than that of Mr. Berger, so this helped us see the different view on this topic. She gave us many facts about the LBUSD experiment.
Interview with Brad Baker:
This interview helped us see the opinion of a principal. Brad Baker was neither
for nor against uniforms. This really helped us see both positives and negatives
of uniforms. We needed someone who felt neutral, since we already had strong for
and against beliefs. He helped us greatly with both sides of his point of view.
Interview with Cherie Phoenix:
Cherie Phoenix, and office manager, was also interviewed. She was definitely neutral on the topic and told us many different ways uniforms are good or bad. Just like Mr. Baker. Her opinions helped us greatly and helped us decide what our main reasons for the positives and negatives of school uniforms.
Interview with Patty Aaron:
Patty Aaron is a kindergarten teacher who was against school uniforms, because it took away individuality. This was an interesting point because it really does. This is an important counter argument to school uniforms being used in school. Very interesting. She did not think it respected the founding fathers or the constitution which was unique and helpful.
Interview with Julie Judd:
Mrs. Judd was for school uniforms in some cases and against it in others. She thought it improved self esteem for girls who could not exactly wear the “cute, tight, popular” outfits all the others wore. She felt very strong about this and this gave us a good idea of how school uniforms do create a sense of equality.
Secondary Sources:
Interview with John Grasel:
John Grasel is an 8th grade student at Chaparral Middle School. He is against school uniforms; he says you can’t “reveal yourself”. He would not wear one, and pretty much thought that uniforms had no effect whatsoever.
Interview with Erik Swanson:
Erik Swanson is an 8th grade student at Chaparral Middle School. He is strongly against uniforms. His explanation? “They’re stupid.” He believes that uniforms would have no effect other than to stop labeling.
Interview with Melia Fernandez:
Melia Fernandez is an 8th grade student at Chaparral Middle School. She is for school uniforms because she reasons that it will prevent having to choose clothing. She has mixed feelings as to whether or not school uniforms affect certain things such as behavior and attitude.
Interview with Brittany Alexander:
Brittany Alexander is an 8th grade student at Chaparral Middle School. Her interview was probably the most helpful, as she actually wore a uniform in 4th grade and hated it. She would most defiantly not wear one, but would let her child wear one if they wanted to.
