This scenario will NOT work with Civ2 versions other than MGE, I am told there is a converter which can convert MGE scenarios to FW so people whit FW might be able to run it too. Make a new folder under the Scenarios folder. Call it "1655" and put all the files in it, except the *.wav from the sounds1,2,3.zip, which should be put in a sub-folder called "sound" inside the "1655" folder.
The "kings.zip" contains dll files whit new faces for the kings for negotiations, these should be used only after backing up the original files and arent necesary to play the scenario.
Now open Civ2 in the regular way, select 'play a scenario', open the 1655 folder and double-click on 1655.scn.

Whenever the scenario asks you to change season quit the program and run the winter.bat or summer.bat these will change the season for you.

1. Intro:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1648: the peace of Westphalia is signed, marking the end of the spanish era of european domination and the beginning of the french one.
It also marks the advent of Sweden as the new ruler of the baltics and the dominant power in Scandinavia.
The Holy Roman Empire is now only a beautifull phrase for diplomats to use, the "nation" has been divided into a catholic and a protestant part consisting of myriads of small duchys, dukedoms and city states.
The only nations who wasn't affected by the peace of Westphalia where The Ottoman Empire, The Polish-Lithuanian Comonwealth and Muscovite Russia.
The same month as the treaty is signed an old landowner and lord in Ukraine starts a cossack rebelion against the Polish-Lithuanian Comonwealth, this isn't somehting unusual, the poles are used to the cossacks revoling from time to time.
This time however the rebelion is lead by the extrordinary old man called Bohdan Khmelnytskyi, the first thing he does is to ally whit the neighborring Tartars and his revolt succed so well that Ukraine is all his whitin a few years, the Tartar allies are traded for new Russian ones.
Tzar Aleksej of imperial muskovite Russia invades the comonwealth and takes the supposedly unbeatably fortified city of Smolensk whitin a few months.
The Polish state is severely shaken, thousands of Tallers has been invested into the defences of Smolensk, how was this possible?
The asnwer is simple, the city of smolensk was one of the last places in the world to be fortified in the old medieval style all new fortresses has been built acording to the Tracee Italian or Vaubin style.
Tzar Aleksej had hired foreign mercenairies to do the siege and the city was breached easily by pounding mortars and newly dug trenches.
The Russian army expanded alarmingly fast, Sweden looked at the Russian expansion whit fear: What if Russia conquered the coastal parts of Poland?
That would destroy the old Swedish dream of turning the baltics into a swedish lake, "Dominium Maris Baltici", to prevent this Sweden decides to invade Poland; securing the coast first.
The Swedish succes was stunning, the modern Swedish army who had just fought in the thirty years war easily defeated all that the polish can put up against them, the Poles uses harldy any infantry or artillery and thier main force is still consisting of Hussars, the polish knights.
The succes is so surprising that the newly appointed swedish king Karl X Gustaf: Carolus Gustavus Reagis; decides to march against Warszawa instead of Danzig, this new Swedish king is going to earn a reputation as invincible on the battle field, he has been brought up on stories of great heroes and generals and is determined to become one of them, nobody knows what to expect of this new king. Yet he will change the history of Europe around him, not loosing a single battle in his entire life, before dying unexpectedly from a cold in early 1660.

As the scenario starts the situation in Europe is very tense,

2:The playable nations are:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sweden (recomended for play):

The newly crowned Swedish king is an almost absulte monarch, he never felt appriciated untill he got assigned to the army during the late stages of the thirty years war and he really likes the life in the field, he is also a great gambler and enyojs taking risks.
The Polish-Lithuanian comonwealth is under attack by the Russians and is also fighting a civil war in Ukraine. They are divided and the king is constantly squabling whit his nobility. The polish army consists mostly of Hussars (polish knights) and there is almost no infantry or
modern fortifications...
Sweden has just finnished of the 30 years war and has a large army that
they need to dispose off, that army is also a very experienced and
modern one, almost the opposite from the Polish.
An old Swedish dream has allways been "Dominium Maris Baltici" the total
domination of the baltics. Danzig is the only major port and rivermouth
that isn't Swedish, Sweden sees its chanse and jumps at it.
A swedish army lead by the king himself enters the comonwealth trying to
grab hold of the entire Polish part of the baltic coast. But when they
see how unmodern the Polish army is Karl X Gustav makes a bold move:
He will march towards Warzaw not Danzig...

Swedens main area of expansion in the beginning is Poland, but the large Polish-Lithuanian Comonwealth is very hard to controll something that the Swedes will become painfully aware of.
There is also the old rival Denmark, can the Danes be trusted not to stab Sweden in the back while it is maintaining a war in Poland?
And what to do when (if?) Poland is conquered, should the Swedish army march on towards Vienna and the old Imperial enemy?
Europe holds its breath as the Swedish king makes descisions that will write history.

Russia (recomended for play):

The Russians are lead by Tzar Aleksej, Russia has been be cought in civil strife for a long time but it is now united under Tzar Aleksej. While the Russians where fighting internally both the Polish and the Swedish tried to grab as much as possible of Russia and succeded quite well in doing so. Russias goal is to take back what was lost during these years. Russia is however more modernized than Poland and has a small but well equipped army...

Russias area of Expansion is The polish and the Swedes, taking back what was lost was the Tzars historical intention but you can change that and maybe even expand Russia beyond its former glory.

Denmark-Netherlands (Recomended for play):

Denmark and Netherlands has been merged since they where allied during most of the time of this war and their goals where very similar...

The Danes are constantly trying to make life a harder for the Swedes,
they haven't quite accepted that Sweden is now the dominating Power in
the baltics, and they still have controll over resund...

The Dutch want balance in the baltics, if the Swedish do get Danzig it isn't going to benefit the dutch trade...

The Netherlands make a mutual defence pact whit Denmark...

Danish-Dutch goals are to keep the baltic free of Swedish domination, but the Dutch motives arent the same as the Danish ones.
Sweden is really Denmarks old archrival so war is almost inevitable, especially now that the Swedish army is tied up in Poland...

Protestants (Recomended for play):

"Protestants" are a merge of Brandenburg, England, Transylvania and a few german city states.

Frederik Wilhelm of Brandenburg is quitly supporting Karl X Gustav in his war against the comonwealth and allows Swedish troops to use Brandenburgian soil to enter the Polish-Lithuanian comonwealth.

Racoczy of Transylvania is totaly convinced that the Swedish king is a
saint that will save all protestants from the wretched catholics. The only thing that hinders him from entering the war is his wife and his mother in law, they both think that the Sultan wouldn't look kindly of him attacking Poland (Transylvania is an Ottoman vassal but still a
protestant nation who rules itself mostly).

England is supporting everyone who bothers the Dutch...
Cromwell is therefore quitly supporting the Swedes.

Protestant goals are not necesarily totaly defined when the scenario starts, they can chose sides in this conflict very much as they want to. They must still keep in mind the Habsburg influence however.

France (Recomended for play):

The French are in thier golden age under Le Rio Solleille and French-Swedish Relations have allways been good...
The thirty years war is not entirely over for the French and the Spanish, there is still lots of fighting going on in the Pyrenees.

French goals should as allways be to undermine the Habsburgs. Other than that and the old rivalry whit England the French player isn't tied to doing anything, France can very much shape the world around herself.

The Habsburgs (Recomended for play):

The Spanish are currently fighting the French in what is a leftover from
the thirty years war. There is
The Empire is quiet, nobody knows how this collosus (a very aged collosus but a collosus non the less) will react on the recent events.

Habsburg goals are to put an end to French domination (if possible) and to reinstate the Holy Roman Empire as a power to be counted whit. There is also the problem whit the Ottomans in the south...

The Polish-Lithuanian Comonwealth (Not recomended for play):

Poland has enormous internal problems most nobles hasnt even acknowledged the fact that the Comonwealth is at war, Russia has taken large and rich portions of the northern parts of the comonwealth and now the Swedes are moving in from the north (along the Dna) and from the west (through Brandenburg).

Poland is not recomended for play in single player games becouse it is to easy to thwart the AI invasions, thus spoiling the entire scenario (but should a multiplayer game(probably a pbem one due to the seasons) be undertaken and Sweden is played by a human player, then Poland could prove very chalanging to play).

3.Notes on Seasons and Terrain:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Some things in this scenario is very different from how normal Civilization functions, every november and march a message will pop up and ask you to change season, this is done by quiting Civ 2 and running the aplications Summer.bat or Winter.bat, while this may seem cumbersome playtesting has shown that it really isn't a problem (comments are ofcourse welcome and can be sent to henrik.lohmander@telia.com).
The difference between summer and winter is a big one (this time period was called the little Ice Age for a reason) I have listed all terrains underneath so that the differences (and also the terrains themselves can be viewed, not that in the winter all units have less moves so terrain becomes harder to enter as well):

Dessert:
One of the few terrains that wont change when you change season, desserts are barren and not very usable, exists only in Africa and Turkey.
(Movecost: 1 Defence: 2 (normal) Food: 0 Production: 1 Trade: 0, Dessert can be cultivated and will then produce one food)

Plains:
Summer:
Exists virtually everywhere especially abundant in Ukraine which is famous for its giant wheat fields.
(Movecost: 1 Defence: 2 (normal) Food: 1 Production: 1 Trade: 0, Plains can be cultivated and will then produce 2 extra food)
Winter:
In the winter plains become covered whit snow and thus wont produce food.
(Movecost: 1 Defence: 2 (normal) Food: 0 Production: 1 Trade: 0, Plains can be cultivated and will then produce 1 extra food)

Grassland:
Summer:
Also exists in almost every place on the continent, Grassland makes more food than Plains does.
(Movecost: 1 Defence: 2 (normal) Food: 2 Production: 1 Trade: 0, Grassland can be cultivated and will then produce 2 extra food)
Winter:
In the winter the grassland is snow covered and wont be as productive.
(Movecost: 1 Defence: 2 (normal) Food: 0 Production: 1 Trade: 0, Plains can be cultivated and will then produce 1 extra food)

Forest:
Summer:
Forests are very different from a normal civ 2 game, Forests where not places you brought your army to during this period, they are full of deserters from the 30 years war and your own men will also dessert this is reflected whit by a significantly reduced defence bonus (-50%) and a very high movement cost (these forests where very dense, traveling through them took very much time).
(Movecost: 8 Defence: 1 (-50%) Food: 1 Production: 2 Trade: 0, Forests can be changed to plains but that will take 15 turns to do (1 year and 3 months in the scenario)).
Winter:
In the winter forests becomes more passable and will not reduct from you defence bonus.
(Movecost: 3 Defence: 2 (normal) Food: 0 Production: 2 Trade: 0, Forests can be changed to plains but that will take 15 turns to do (1 year and 3 months in the scenario)).

Wooded Hills:
Summer:
Most hills in Europe are wooded, the trees can be removed by a peasent (or by your baggage units should you feel like using them for that). They produce more shields than a barren hill, but a mine wont add as many shields as it would on a barren hill.
As whit all forested areas in this scenario the wooden hill has an extremly high movement allowance and no defence bonus.
(Movecost: 6 Defence: 2 (normal) Food: 1 Production: 2 Trade: 0, Wooded hills can be converted to barren ones and can also be mined for 2 extra shields).
Winter:
In the winter the wooded hills wont produce as much food as otherwise.
(Movecost: 2 Defence: 2 (normal) Food: 0 Production: 2 Trade: 0, Wooded hills can be converted to barren ones and can also be mined for 2 extra shields).

Hills:
Summer:
Barren Hills are much easier to defend and can also be cultivated to produce food, a mining on a barren hill will produce more than a mine on a wooded one. But the basic production of a wooded one is higher than that of a barren one.
(Movecost: 2 Defence: 4 (+100%) Food: 1 Production: 1 Trade: 0, Hills can be cultivated and will then produce 1 extra food or mined to produce 3 extra shields).
Winter:
(Movecost: 2 Defence: 3 (+50%) Food: 0 Production: 1 Trade: 0, Hills can be cultivated and will then produce 0 extra food or mined to produce 3 extra shields).

Mountains:
Mountain ranges in Europe are abundant but although they produce many shields (when mined), a mountain isn't a very usefull thing unless a rescourse (like Iron or Gold) is found in it. They don't change depending on season.
(Movecost: 6 Defence: 6 (+200%) Food: 0 Production: 0 Trade: 0, Mountains can be mined and will then produce 4 extra shields)

Objective:
Summer:
These terrains are placed at certain objectives as important rivermouths and capitals.
They prodce lots of trade.
(Movecost: 1 Defence: 1 (-50%) Food: 2 Production: 2 Trade: 4, Certain objectives are more valuable than others and will thus produce more trade and/or shields(example Chateau de Versailles outside Paris, which give aditional shields)).
Winter:
The only difference is that it is now easier to defend objectives (normal defence bonus).
(Movecost: 1 Defence: 2 (normal) Food: 2 Production: 2 Trade: 4)

Swamp:
Summer:
Swamps have a high movement cost and produce very little, they reduce defence significantly (near 100%).
(Movecost: 4 Defence: 0 (should be -100% but is more like 95% it is still not the place to move your units) Food: 1 Production: 0 Trade: 0, Swamps can be dried up and will then become Grassland (but it will take very long time to do)).
Winter:
Easier to move through, otherwise no diffrence.
(Movecost: 2 Defence: 0 (should be -100% but is more like 95%) Food: 0 Production: 0 Trade: 0)

Taiga:
Summer:
This is not really Taiga, all coniferous forest on the map is represented by this terrain, it is basicly a less productive forest.
(Movecost: 8 Defence: 1 (-50%) Food: 1 Production: 1 Trade: 0, Taiga can be changed to grassland but that will take a very long time to do).
Winter:
No big change, the taiga only costs 4 movement points now.
(Movecost: 4 Defence: 1 (-50%) Food: 1 Production: 1 Trade: 0, Taiga can be changed to grassland but that will take a very long time to do).

Ocean:
Summer:
This is the most unchanged terrain in the scenario, it is basicaly the civ 2 ocean.
(Movecost: 1 Defence: 2 (normal) Food: 1 Production: 0 Trade: 2)
Winter:
The terrain isnt changed much (except that it isnt producing any food) but all ships have lost thier movement, since large parts of the ocean is covered by ice.

Other season changing things you should be aware of are:
Roads multiply by 1 instead of 2.
It becomes easier for units to defend themselves and they can move less, the winter is very good used as a time to catch your breath and repair your units.
Ships lose all moves.
The sea between the Danish mainland and the Danish islands (where the capital is) will freeze and it is possible to attack Copenhagen from Germany.
There are lots of other changes as well, but you will have to find those out for yourself.

4.Units
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I will explain the basic units here:
Pikeman: Used along whit musketeers and artillery for a very effective combo.
Pikemen are not buildable by Poland as the scenario starts.
Artillery:
There are three sorts of artillry; Horse artillery (light and fast, best used aganst units in the open)
Artillery (medium cannon so to speak) good against lighter fortifications, but weaker than the light artillery in the open.
Mortar (very heavy seige artillery) good against all fortfications even the modern Tracee Italian style fortresses can be defeated by these monsters.
Fortifications:
The system of fortification has been changed all together, when you want to build fortifications in your cities you build either an old school fortress (rather cheap and not very good) or a fortress of the modern Vaubin/Tracee Italien style (costs a lot but is also very powerfull). A combination of both styles is also possible (a city can be surounded whit many forts).
Then there is the question about how well you want to maintain these fortifications, if you want them to be just the forts they are and let them maintain themsleves then they wont hold out as well as if you maintain them steadily whit new money alll the time.
Maintaining a fortress requires you to first pay a certain amount of shields (to make the fortress(es)) more powerfull and then you will have to pay 2000 Riechstaller every turn to maintain the fortress(es).
Sometimes you wont have the money to maintain your fortresses and thus leave them whitout maintenance this will result in more less defended cities but they will still be fortified which is better than just placing burgher millitia in them.
Millitia:
If you are in a really bad situation a beseiged town can churn out cheap burgher millitia, these are unitversity students and merchants that helps in the defence of the cities.
Cavalry:
These units should not be used to attack fortifications, but they are usefull for scouting, plundering enemy villages and taking out undefended enemy units.
The Polish has the ability to build Hussars old polish knights whit lances, although these are utterly oboslete on the battlefield in general they are still the best riders of europe.
They are better than normal cavalry but still outdated in general (especially since the polish wont use infantry, atleast not from the begining).
Baggage:
These represents all the people that travels whit an army, the unit is an engineer and should be used to quickly build fortresses around your seiging units.
Peasents are your settlers, they are used acordingly.
Villages, Cities, Castles, etc
These are plunder units, when owned by the independents they will yield 50000 riechstaller to whoever burns them down (they are barbarian diplomats), when owned by a certain civ (as the polish) they will yield different amounts of gold depending on who takes it (some civs wont get gold at all from Polish villages).

5.Finnishing Notes:
All nations are running a deficeit (by design), this is becouse of the large depts that they all have from the thirty years war and all nations will recieve new loans from time to time, but these loans are not sufficient to keep your nation running, you will have to get money by other means (plundering villages and cities is a good way of doing this).
Government switching is not allowed.
The Polish are ruled by Comonwealth (Despotism)
The Russians by Monarchy (Monarchy)
The rest of the players by Monarchy (Communism)
In certain cities there is a risk of a plague break out when they go into disorder, this will only affect the human player and only if he is extremly carelles, but it is good for multiplayer games and to make sure that certain cities will aquire special attention (it is considered cheating to simply sell of the "Serfs" improvement).
All nations will hire mercenaries from time to time (mostly scottish).
Spoilers follow (dont read these if you want to be suprised during the scenario):

When Sweden has taken the city of Krakow (objective x2) revolting polish peasans are going to start poping up everywhere and Poland will get its King unit. But not taking the city of Krakow as Sweden will often result in failiure annyway since it is a city whit very high production and it is situated so that if you simply bypass it you are likely to be stabbed in the back later on.

If Karl X Gustav dies he will be reincarnated once (see event for details).

The forests is full of desserters so dont leave your cities/weak units undefended.

If Sweden takes Danzig they will get another 100.000 Taller (100 gold) per turn (becouse they then have a trade monopoly on the baltic sea).

All ships has a 12.5% chance of sinking in the open sea.

If England (the protestants) conquers Edinburgh they will receive an aditional scottish unit from time to time in that city.
