Hostis Ante Portis! - Enemy At The Gate!

This scenario is about the last war between Sweden and Russia,
a conflict that was to end the 600 years of Swedish reign in
Finland, and replace it with that of Russia.

When Russian forces crossed the Swedish border on the morning of
February 21st 1808, Europe was since long ablaze, torn apart by
the bloody conflicts known as the Napoleonic Wars.
Sweden had joined Great Britain in the so called Fifth Coalition
to end French aggression, while the Russian Empire had allied
with Napoleonic France in the Peace of Tilsit 1807.
Caught on seperate sides in the struggle between Great Britain
and France, conflict between Sweden and Russia was to prove
inevitable and, in the case of Sweden, fatal.

In the Peace of Friderichshamn on September 17th 1809, Sweden was
forced to cede Finland, land island and Northern Sweden to Russia.
The Swedish Empire was no more.

GENERAL INFORMATION:

Before you start playing, please be aware of the following:

*In this scenario, the names of monarchs and cities are spelled like
they originally were in the 1800s. Consequently, they may vary from
 what you are used to.

*Please note that ordering your scientists to pursuit a tech, using
the Science Advisor, MAY cause the scenario to crash.
(No point in trying to develop a tech anyway, as this is an out-
and-out war scenario. You've been given every tech you need.)

*"Grassland" and "Scrub" squares are STACKABLE, meaning that these
squares works like if there was a Fortress in them. You may stack
units in these squares without risking them all to be destroyed
 in one single enemy strike.

*Historically, the Napoleonic Era's Russian-Swedish War lastet from
February 21st 1808 until the Peace of Friderichshamn, on September
 17th 1809. The Danish-Swedish War lastet from March 14th 1808 until
the Peace of Jnkping, on December 10th 1809.
YOU however, may play until the battle of Waterloo, in July 1815.

WHOM TO PLAY?

RUSSIA
======

You are Emperor Alexander I of Russia, son and successor of
Pavlov I (Emperor in the period 1796-1801).

The Imperial Russian Army has crossed the Swedish border and
stands in Nyland with orders to incorporate Finland in the
Russian Empire.
Your first tasks are fairly easy - strike, and strike hard.
Crush the outnumbered Swedish forces posted at the border
and take as many Finnish cities as possible before they get
defenses.

Now, what will You do next?

*Split Your forces, advancing both along the Finnish coast
and in the interior of the country?

*Or will You keep Your army united and storm Your way along
the coast, ignoring the cities in the heart of Finland?

PS: Deploy Your Diplomats wisely.

SWEDEN
======

You are King Gustaf IV Adolf of Sweden, son and successor of
Gustaf III (King in the period 1771-1792).

The Russian Army has crossed the border, catching the Swedish
Army in Finland unprepared. Try keeping the invaders at bay
with Your border garrisons while You entrench infantry units
in the numerous unprotected cities in Finland.

What will You do next?

*Secure the Norwegian border with the Swedish army, and leave
it to Your Finnish army to repell the Russian invasion - facing
the risk of being outmanned in Finland?

*Or will You send all available forces to Finland, leaving the
western border unprotected, thus risking it to be overwhelmed
by Norwegian forces if Denmark should choose to intervene?

PS: Exploit the advantages of Your superiority at sea.

NORWAY
======

You are Christian August, Prince of Augustenborg and Governor
of the Danish province of Norway.

Your King Frederic VI's Russian allies have attacked Swedish
Finland, forcing the Swedes to weaken their defenses on the
western border and transfer forces to the Finnish front.
Although the British Royal Navy's naval blockade prevents the
transport of reinforcements from Denmark in case of a Danish
intervention in the Russian-Swedish war, the Norwegian Army
may prove sufficient to conduct a successful invasion of
Sweden if deployed correctly. Keep in mind though, that the
Norwegian economy is extremely fragile and that it will take
some skills to master it simultaneously with waging war.

*Mobilize, mobilize, mobilize, while fighting off the sporadic
Swedish attacks on your fortresses. Gather Your growing army
in one of the fortresses along the Swedish southern border,
wait for things to cool down before launching an invasion.

PS: Be aware that You've got the ability to negotiate with the
Swedes, so sign an armistice with them when necessary, as
this will allow You both to rebuild Your economy as well
as to mobilize for further attacks on Sweden while the
Swedish Army is kept busy by the Russians.
