“Lepidum peruvianum Chacón, or Lepidium meyenii Walpers, internationally well know by its original Andean name, MACA,
a tuber of Andine origin still cultivated in the highlands over
12,000 to 15,000 feets over sea level, in Peru for local preparation,
was studied. The carbohydrate,
lipid, protein, fiber and also the amino-acid, fatty acid,
mineral and sterol fractions were determined. The results show that
the tuber is nutritionally interesting. Alkaloid like compounds (
Glucosilanates) were also found. It is concluded that this
tuber can be a food source in countries, where economic and technological
conditions are inadequate to combat malnutrition.” (1);
“Treatment with gelatinized
maca resulted in increased seminal volume, motile
sperm count, and sperm motility.
Serum hormone levels were not modified with maca
treatment. Increase or to increase dose of maca.” (2);
