Movie Log - 2003

Pre Movie Log 2003 (Before I started recording dates)

  06/04/03 (VHS)

The Burmese Harp (1956) - Beautiful and haunting Japanese anti-war film.

  06/05/03 (Theatre)

Finding Nemo (2003) - Hilarious and visually impressive, Finding Nemo is a must-see.

  06/05/03 (DVD)

The Murders Are Among Us (Die Morder sind unter
uns) (1946)

  06/06/03 (Theatre)

  Finding Nemo
(2003) - Saw it again 24 hours later, and just as good.

  06/06/03 (VHS)

  Blowup
(1966) - Finally found one of my cinematic Holy Grails, and it didn't let me down.  It's intoxicating.

  06/08/03 (DVD)

Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966) - Tour-de-force.  Disturbing.  Devestating.  Amazing.

  06/11/03
(VHS)

Blowup (1966) - Watched it again, and it was even better.  An unquestionable masterpiece in my book.

  06/12/03 (Theatre)

  The Italian Job
(2003) - It's nothing we haven't seen before, but it's good entertainment and great fun.

  06/12/03 (DVD)

The Garden of the Finzi-Contini (1970) - Just as Kael said it was: "extraordinary."

06/14/03 (DVD)

The Shining (1980) - Strike four or five now for Kubrick.  Lacks this thrills and chills I expected.  Dull.

06/15/03 (DVD)

The Searchers (1956) - Good, but too many flaws for me to consider it great.

06/16/03 (DVD)

Room at the Top (1959) - An underappreciated masterpiece.  Simone Signoret is a revelation.

06/17/03 (VHS)

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956) - One of my all-time favorites.  Still packs a punch after all these years.

06/19/03 (VHS)

A Man Escaped (1956) - Perfectly constructed, entirely engrossing.  Fantastic.

  06/22/03 (VHS)

Celine and Julie Go Boating (1974) - Absurd, utterly absurd.  But extremely unique, and fascinating too.

06/22/03 (VHS)

F is For Fake (1975) - Wow!  And I mean WOW!  Perhaps my new favorite Orson Welles film!

06/23/03 (VHS)

The Naked City (1948) - Never really pictured Barry Fitzgerald in a film noir, but here he is.  And it's a good film too!

06/25/03 (DVD)

Seconds (1966) - Another John Frankenheimer winner.  Twisted and grotesque but visually a marvel.  Packs quite a punch.

06/27/03 (DVD)

The Young Lions (1958) - I was expecting much more- especially because it stars my two favorite actors.  Some
effective moments, but too many flat and dull ones too.  I blame director Edward Dymtryk who lets his material get away from
him.  It's just a pretty mediocre film overall.

06/28/03 (DVD)

The Hours (2002) - My second viewing of the film, and I still quite love it.  Yes, it's flawed, but it's also literate,
intelligent, and display some fantastic acting and skillful direction.  One of my favorite films from last year.

06/29/03 (DVD)

Le Passione de Jeanne d'Arc (The Passion of Joan of Arc) (1928) - Quite simply one of the greatest
films ever made showcasing some of the most brilliant acting ever caught on celluloid.  Unforgettable.
