What's this Cavern thing about?
I have several friends who are Beatles nay sayers who at one point enjoyed making me furious when the Beatles ever entered our conversation.  I listened to everything from "Ringo wasn't a good drummer" to "their voices really weren't that good" to "their music all sounds the same" to (if they really wanted to make me mad) "I just don't think they were as influential as everybody says they are..."

Not that it matters, of course, for the Beatles and their music have continually proved their influence and longevity with a body of music containing a depth that is virtually unmatched in popular music.  Their music has survived the initial rejection from the establishment, public burning of their albums, and the personal problems and constant fighting between the band members themselves.  Some objectors some thirty years after the fact?  Well, it just really doesn't matter, does it?

I won't deny that as individuals all four of  the Beatles have been surpassed by other musicians.  Judging by ability alone Ringo is certainly not among the greatest who has ever banged a drum, John's voice isn't at the same level as a large group of other singers, same for Paul's bass playing, and as good as George was at the guitar, there's been better.  No, the greatness that's so apparent in the Beatles music cannot be measured by their individual talents, rather, the genius comes from the magical combination of their individual contributions to the group as a whole.  The
continual quality and breadth of the lyrics and melodies penned by the team of Lennon and McCartney (with later additions by Harrison) has never really been equaled, and the experimentation and enthusiasm consistently displayed by the Fab Four has proved to be hard to match.

There were many bands before, many after, and many more to come, but the Beatles have always risen above all challengers, which leads me to believe that while a lot of music will disappear with the passage of time, we'll always have The Beatles.

So much has been written about the Beatles over the last forty years that I'm unsure what I could possibly contribute that hasn't been done before, and probably done much better at that.  This is my puny addition to millions and millions of words already extolling the praises of four singers from Liverpool on a site that's supposed to be devoted to movies.  But I can't help but feel that this site would never seem complete to me if I didn't do
something.  So this is what I came up with.
