I opened my eyes and the room was so bright I thought for sure it was morning. I looked at my clock on the bedside table and had to look again. It was the middle of the night. As I sat up in my bed I realized it was a glow, not quite a light, but a glow like the ones you only see in movies. Then, there it was, a figure of a woman floating in this glowing, not quite light. She held her arms open and spoke to me. It was like the sound an angel could only make, a mixture of song and whisper. It was a visitor from somewhere and I was going to find out from where she came. But my real question was why... I had to go closer to her to hear what she was saying. I wasn't sure if I should, but I felt like I had to. She was beckoning to me to come closer. I rose from the bed and put on my fuzzy slippers. It felt so cold in the room all of a sudden. Almost like a chilly spring morning. Quite odd for the end of July. I am sure it's still warm out I remember thinking it was in the mid 90's when I put out the light for bed time. Maybe this is just all a dream. As I got closer, the figure seemed to be more like a silhouette. You can tell it is someone, but there's no face. The voice though, there is something so familiar yet it is so dreamy. I've heard this voice before I am sure of it. I wish I could see her face. I am sure it is a she, the voice has to be female.
If I could just make out a face. The voice is soothing but I still can't make out what she's saying to me. Maybe I should be scared, but she just isn't scary. Maybe it's an angel. I thought angels had wings. This has to be a dream. I can feel the glow now I am so close, I hope I can make out watch she's saying. The voice, I know this voice. Finally the courage to ask, "Are you my Nana?" The glow from the visitor began to fade and I could finally see the face. The visitor answers me finally in a voice I know and love, "Yes, Beth, it's me." My heart dropped at that very moment. I couldn't grasp the reality, if it was real. My Nana had gone to heaven a few years ago and I dreamed of seeing her again and hearing her voice. Those were only dreams, is this? Nana answered me as though she knew what I was thinking, "You aren't dreaming darling, I am here with you. I've come from heaven to visit you." My smile would've outshined any glow she could've brought with her. I asked ever so quietly, "Nana, why didn't I recognize you at first?" She replied with a smile, "Beth, the visitors' rules from heaven state that you may only visit one who truly loves you with all their heart. The test to see if the person loves you that much is to see if they can recognize you with their heart and not their eyes."
I had so many questions and my brain was whirling a thousand miles a minute. I didn't know what to say or how to say it. I had missed her so much. As I turned to look at her and finally speak, I noticed the glow was coming back and her face was starting to darken. I had to say something quick before she was gone forever, again. "Nana, I love you!!" That's all I could say and I decided the most important thing. She replied ever so quietly in that angelic voice, "I know sweetheart, but my visit is over for tonight. I'll see you again soon, I promise." The glow took over the room once again and then she was gone. My Nana had gone again.
There was a promise though, that she would return. I hope she does. Though I still wonder why she has come after all this time. Maybe next time she'll tell me.
