As a child, I lived in Lansing, Michigan where my earth father was stationed at an Air Force base. I remember catching the bus to go to school every morning. But this one particular morning there was a lot of fog, and I could not even see my hand in front of my face. But, as an obedient child I listened to my mother and I went outside to catch the bus. I remember there was a large chain fence in front of the house, and I was looking for the gate. I got lost and confused and I could not see anything but this thick, white fog that came up from the river which ran in front of our house. I got lost in the fog I started to cry.
Suddenly I heard a voice so soft that I whimpered. This voice asked me what was wrong. I told this voice that I was lost and I was trying to catch the school bus, but I could not find the gate. I could only find the fence. The voice was so soft, and so very tender. I listened to this voice as she told me to take her hand. I did. I asked this voice who she was. She told me that she was the lady of the fog and that she helped lost children to find their way. I took her hand and she lead me back to the steps of my house. I asked her to come inside out of the fog, but she said, "no", that she had other children to help. I thanked her and went inside.
My mother was surprised to see me and asked me how I got back to the house, as she was going to go out and find me. I told her that the lady of the fog had helped me. My mother just shook her head in disbelief.
I have never forgotten that lady of the fog and sometimes now I even feel the hand of this respected and charished friend leading me out of danger.
