Title : Study of Natural Convection Heat Transfer from a Domestic water Heater.

Duration : 1 Year

Team Size : 4

Description : The study was conducted to identify the excessive heat transfer zones present in the domestic water heater. Infrared thermometer was used for temperature measurement. C program was developed to calculate the heat transfer coefficient on the water heater surface by making use of available data. Results obtained highlights the heat flow pattern in the water heater and helps to establish the excessive heat transfer zones in domestic water heater. Finite element simulation of flow and heat transfer in domestic water heater for a particular case was also conducted. The solution to the Navier-stokes equation along with energy equation was obtained from the readily available F.E.M software.

Scope of further Study :

  1. Analysis of temperature distribution along the surface of water heater after insulating it.
  2. Study of heat transfer within the water heater assuming two phase systems.
  3. Study of heat flow pattern towards optimizing water level and power input.
Based on the above investigations a technical paper titled

"EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF TRANSIENT NATURAL CONVECTION

HEAT TRANSFER IN DOMESTIC WATER-HEATER" was submitted and got selected for Presentation in the 26th National Conference on Fluid Mechanics and Fluid Power held at IIT, Kharagpur in December 1999.
