• Project titled ‘Measurement of Mandrel position in automation of Braiding Machine’ was carried out at NAL, Bangalore, as a final year project.
 
 

 Description:

Braiding is one of the most important process, in the development of various fibre components being used at NAL. Braiding machine used here is controlled by varying voltages supplied to the motors. The exact position of the mandrel could be known only by measuring. Such process were not only inaccurate but also lime consuming.

This project helps in determining the exact mandrel position and also the direction of motion of the mandrel. An optical encoder is used to measure the distance moved by the mandrel.

The output from the optical encoder and associated circuitry is fed to a computer and the required information is derived after processing the valuable data. This is done using a simple C program. This method of measuring the exact location of mandrel is highly accurate and fast.
