Born, and currently living in Buenos Aires, percussionist and improviser Diego Chamy studied jazz drums, symphonic percussion and composition with well-known teachers, but it is his studies and continued interest in contemporary philosphy that have most clearly shaped his musical and artistic thinking.

Chamy participated in numerous avantgarde jazz groups until, in 2002, he turned exclusively to contemporary music with special emphasis on real-time creation, also known as free improvised music. Among his jazz groups, mention should be made of the Norris-Paz-Chamy trio, with Enrique Norris and Sabino Paz, as well as Pablo Ledesmas project, The Music of Steve Lacy, which was the only group in Argentina to take an interest in the compositions of that great U.S. saxophonist. Chamy has performed with both of those groups at most of the Buenos Aires jazz spots, as well as releasing several recordings. He also performed and recorded with important foreign musicians such as Elton Dean (U.K.) or George Haslam (U.K.), and in November 2002 he toured with U.S. pianist David Haney, performing in Buenos Aires Teatro Coln (CETC), the El Crculo Theater in Rosaro, and other leading venues across the country, as well as an appearance at the Second International Jazz Festival in Valparaso, Chile.

Since 1998, Diego Chamy has been mainly involved with free improvised music, working intensely to explore new forms of expressin, creating new techniques and modes of action with his instruments. He has performed with almost all of the local improvisers, appearing at the Teatro Coln (CETC), cultural centers including Borges, San Martn and Islas Malvinas, the Saln Dorado of the House of Culture, the Museum of Contemporary Art of the National University in Misiones, the Museum of Contemporary Latin American Art in La Plata and the Metropolitan Museum, among many others of equal standing.

Through 2001 he worked regularly with the Tro de Improvisacin, alongside pianist Gabriel Paiuk and Luis Conde, on saxophones and clarinets. With this group toured the United States and Europe in November and December of 2001, appearing in different venues and festivals in New York (Roulette), Barcelona (Festival Improvisa), London (Red Rose Club, Ciclo Mopomoso), Fresnes-en-Woevre, France (Festival Densits), etc. Afterwards he worked in duo with Gabriel Paiuk, performing in "The Klinker" (London) and "Kraageluiden" (msterdam). During this tour he also participated in numerous ad-hoc encounters with musicians of the stature of John Russell, Axel Drner, Hans Tammen, Matt Davis, Joan Saura, Sean Meehan and Ricardo Arias among others.

Together with argentinian trumpetist Leonel Kaplan, with whom he has been working in duo for over three years, he has collaborated with many of the most creative improvisers of his generation including Axel Drner and Ute Vlker (Germany), Wade Matthews, Bhob Rainey and Greg Kelley (USA), L Quan Ninh, Michel Doneda, Xavier Charles and Martine Altenburger (France), Rhodri Davies (UK), Ingar Zach, Ivar Grydeland and Tonny Kluften (Norway), Alfredo Costa Monteiro (Portugal), Ferran Fages, Ruth Barbern (Spain) and Alessandra Rombol (Italy). 1
