Deadly Viruses

You can't avoid all viruses entirely. Your body has to learn and find the ways to protect from them all in order to keep health in good shape. Typically a thousandfold smaller than a bacteria, the microbes are found everywhere. Most of the bacteria found into our body are "good" bacteria, doing a good work for you.

Our immune systems (if functioning properly) readily handle viruses whenever we get a cold or intestinal bug, Although viruses are not necessarily any more lethal than bacteria, they're scarier because they live dependently inside our body cells, where antibiotics can't touch them.

Viruses that make lethal comebacks

Moreover, after an initial infection, certain viruses can continue to lurk inside our cells for years, ready to erupt and cause disease later if conditions are right (such as weakened immune system due to stress, fatigue, poor diet, menstruation, vigorous sexual activity or other complications). Obviously, you can't avoid all of these, but by adopting healthy habits, and learning to keep stress at bay, you cut your chances of new outbreaks. The key is a strong, healthy functioning immune system.

Viruses that can lead to cancer

When the nation declared war on cancer in the 1970s, scientists thought a single "cancer virus" might be found. It wasn't. Actually, scientists found that a few viruses lead the body along different paths toward cancer, explains Dawn B. Willis, Ph.D., a virologist at the American Cancer Society. These include hepatitis B, HIV, and the human papilloma virus, the cause of genital warts.

Human papilloma is widely spread among women under 50. Certain strains of this virus produce a substance that disturbs one of the body's normal tumor-protection systems, and causes infections linked to cervical and perhaps anal cancers.

Even if your husband has been your only sex partner, you could have been exposed in earlier relationships through heavy petting, or your husband could have been exposed and transmitted the virus to you.

Virus protection

    • Prevention is the best cure! Maintain a powerful immune system with a healthy lifestyle and adequate supplementation.
    • Wash hands frequently. Viruses can survive on doorknobs, phones, toys; you may also pick them by shaking hands with an infected person, changing a diaper, or wiping a child's nose. If you then touch your eyes, nose, or mouth you can easily become infected.
    • Clean shared items. Soapy water with a splash of chlorine bleach kills viruses on silverware, cups, and toys.
    • Teach children not to sneeze or cough in people's faces, and to wash their hands after using the bathroom.
    • Educate children about animal bites. Children should be taught to tell parents immediately if they've been bitten or "kissed" by an animal. After a bite, clean the area with soap and water and seek medical care.
    • Clean cautiously. Mice and rats may carry the newly recognized Hanta virus, as well as aseptic meningitis. To avoid breathing in viruses while cleaning, don't sweep out floors where rodent have been living. Instead, toss on a 10 to 1 mixture of water and bleach; let it soak into the floor before hosing or sweeping.
