2003-2004 Alumni Pictures and Notes

The Falcons began their 2003-2004 season coming off a brutal summer league with a record of 6-18. The team installed many new defensive strategies and offensive plays which made the summer a learning experience but Were essential to the teams success. The preseason started off with a win against Lincoln in which the senior leadership of guards Irving Chien and Aron Mitsunaga carried the team to victory. The Falcons placed third in the Westmont Tournament with competitive wins against Willow Glen and Fremont. Guards Aron Mitsunaga and Irving Chien Were all-tournament selections, but center Danny Wallace proved to be a Monster in the paint, grabbing every rebound and finishing shots. The next challenge was the Los Gatos tournament with a rematch against an athletic Willow Glen team and a courageous overtime loss against a very tall and strong Live Oak team. Irving Chien dominated the competition, scoring bucket after bucket with a sprained ankle. Their final preseason test was the Prospect Tournament in which Junior guards Chris Etterman and Nima Rad demonstrated their phenomenal outside shooting and newly added forward Adam Sato took his place into the starting lineup. Danny Wallace earned all-tournament honors and proved himself to be the leagues most dominant inside presence. Toward the end of the preseason, Sophomore point guard Ryan Matsuura boldly moved up to varsity and racked up 16 points in his first showing against Kings Academy. Heading into the league season, the Falcons were confident with their preseason success and looked forward to winning league for the first time in four years. Unfortunately, it began with a loss to Cupertino, but this did not spoil their high hopes. Saratoga pounded Monta Vista in every facet of the game. Nima Rad had an outstanding shooting performance with 5 long range three pointers. Next was Santa Clara, in which Saratoga was down by 16 points in the third quarter but managed to rally a 25-point turnaround late in the game with tremendous defensive and pinpoint shooting. The Falcons swept past Lynbrook and Los Altos with great rebounding performances by Justin Kemp, Ben Coggins, and David Orasin. Following a devastating tragedy with coach Daveys wife which taught the team much about life, the team was able to keep rolling and defeated Mountain View with Coach John Bennett leading the charge from the sidelines. Now tied for first, the Falcons mauled both Monta Vista and Cupertino with Danny Wallace totaling over 40 points and 25 rebounds between the two games. Going into the last week week one of two teams to vie for the league title, the Falcons emotional roller coaster hit bottom as they lost the last two. The poor shooting in the last four games of league followed the Falcons into the post season with a game at St. Francis. The Lancers towered over the Falcons, but guards Aron Mitsunaga and Irving Chien led the charge with a combined 27 points and 8 assists. A questionable late technical on one of the Falcon players and several no calls on over the backs contributed to their problems and team fell short in a 47-44 loss to the Lancers. Overall the season was a great success and went from being 7-17 in the summer to finishing with a 18-10 season.
