1998-1999 Alumni Pics
Although all five starters from the '98 team graduated, the 1998-99 Saratoga Falcon basketball team produced two wins each in the Cupertino, Los Gatos, and Saratoga tournaments to open the season 8-2. Junior Micah Weger, who would go on to be named League MVP, earned all-tourney honors at the Los Gatos and Saratoga Shootouts, while senior Geoff LaMotte was named all-tourney at all four tournaments including the Hollister Classic. In the first year that Coach Davey employed his intricate 1-2-2 matchup zone, known to Saratoga insiders as "thumbs up," the Falcons notched non-league wins over Westmont, Menlo and Aragon. Boasting a young lineup, the Falcons fought to a second place tie in the El Camino Division with their losses in league coming by six points or less to Fremont, Gunn and Mountain View. In the CCS playoffs, the Falcons destroyed Pioneer in a first round matchup in which Mike Crosby and Spencer Jamison contributed their typically solid perimeter play. In the second round, the Falcons tried to repeat their previous season's upset of CCS's #1 seed, this time against 30-0 and ranked #3 in the state Santa Cruz. The Falcons, playing hard and playing smart, almost achieved the upset in a sold out and hostile Santa Cruz gym, losing 70-62. The season's numerous close games provided invaluable experience for the junior class, who would go on to a league title and sterling record the next year.
