Winning and losing are very different from surviving and not surviving.  This is one area where participation in competitive tournaments can be misleading. The photo sequence shows one person being unbalanced to the point where they reach the floor. In a competition this encounter would then be stopped and some points given. However if the 'action' continues, we can see that the subsequent fall is worse for the person initially on their feet.

It is for this reason that in Systema training we try not to win - it blinds you to many things. To survive is the first priority and then oppotunities present themselves.

When I saw these photos I was very surprised. Those of you who have had some Judo experience will recognise this counter technique. However the reason I was so surprised is that Mary came up with something so close to a Judo technique completely spontanteously and has never done Judo in her life.
