Abstract:
Introduction: MomordicaCharantia has hypoglycemic effect. Glucocorticoidsinduce diabetes. Hence we tested Karela extract on dexamethasone induced diabetes.
Material & Methods: Two groups of male albino rats, six in each group, weighing around two hundred grams were injected with twelve milligrams per kilo of dexamethasoneintraperitoneally for a period of six days. One group received thousand milligrams per kilo of Karela in two percent gum acacia suspension orally &  the other group received two percent gum acacia suspension for seven days before & during dexamethasone administration. Fasting blood sugar &  intraperitoneal glucose tolerance test values were recorded on the sixth day.
Results: Karela did not have hypoglycemic effect in this model
Conclusion: Earlier studies with fresh juice of bitter gourd too did not produce hypoglycemic effect in this model. In this study we used Karela capsules from Himalaya drug co. According to observations done in our laboratory of other antidiabetic drugs in dexamethasone induced diabetes, we presume MomordicaCharantia does not have insulin sensitiser property.
