Chapter Two
"Eddies in the Wind..."
8th of Flamerule, 1372
Daekyn stood at the top of a shard of rock amongst a valley of lava and brimstone. For as far as could be seen flame and smoke covered the land. Just with in sight was another peak that jutted up towards the red sky. The heated winds carried a voice to Daekyn's ear. A voice Daekyn had heard before, a single voice that spoke with many voices, the voice of Legion. Destruction, torment and pain was all it promised. Daekyn raised his staff and invoked the name of his patron in defiance.
"By Kossuth's glory you will not have me, I am already his servant! You hold no power over me Legion!"
Thunder roared and a storm of fire filled the sky. Daekyn's body was engulfed in an aura of fire and he raised both his hands to the sky.
"Lord of Fire, Master of the purifying flame! Kossuth I invoke thine divine protection! I give myself freely to the cause, to bring Order to Chaos! To strip the land of infidels and bring forth the greater glory that is Kossuth! To raise an empire that will strike down those that oppose you, those that fear you, those that are not worthy to utter your name!" Hands of flame caressed Daekyn, and a soothing, yet powerful voice filled the land.
"Go Mage of Fire, go forth and carry out my will." The voice of Kossuth said.
"NO!" Roared the chorus of Legion, "You shall be ours Firehand!" Hands of flame and demonic talons ripped at Daekyn and pulled at the essence of his soul, each fighting for a piece. Daekyn screamed in agony as the two forces fought through his soul.
Daekyn woke from his dream. The winds howled outside and Daekyn sat up, his gown dripping with sweat. He got up and walked over to the dresser and poured some water into a glass and drank it fully, then filled it again and drank that one. He rubbed some water onto his face and looked into the mirror. His eyes had deep bags under them and he suddenly felt the weight of what he was about to do.
"Funny thing about Dreams" a voice said out of the darkness, a voice Daekyn had not heard in many years, since he was last in Shadow Dale during the crisis of the Azure Bonds. "Sometimes they are memories of the past, sometimes they are messages from the here and now, and sometimes still, they are a message from times yet to come."
Daekyn turned and in the darkness, he saw a familiar silhouette, illuminated only by the glow of a pipe that the man was puffing on. "I wondered when you would get involved in this. I figured it would only be a matter of time before you did" Daekyn said lighting a candle. "If you intervene, I know I am not powerful enough to stop you. But that will not stop me from trying."
"I would not expect otherwise from you. I have kept up on your travels. You have accomplished much, it is a pity to see you destroy it all simply in the name of revenge." The figure said.
"They were the most important thing in my life, it is not just revenge, it is justice." Daekyn replied.
"Be careful when you invoke that term, for Justice is not a loyal mistress, she strikes at both sides and with out mercy." He said. "I am not here to interfere, tonight, I only consider you a player in a much larger play. But I am here to warn you of the consequences of your actions. You have enjoyed the benefits of walking the line between the light and the darkness. Now you are committing yourself to one side with this little project of yours; your role is now changed. The next time we meet, it will be with much more clearly defined roles in the universe, I suggest you keep that in mind" the figure blurred and then faded from sight into the shadows. There was a knock on the door and Atlantean came in sword in hand.
"Daekyn you okay? I thought I heard voices in here. You alone?" Atlantean said.
"Yes, everything is as it should be. Remind me in the morning I need to put a few more wards on the tower" Daekyn said as he got back into bed.

Alusair was growing impatient. The papers strewn about her desk were piled incredibly high, and no end was in sight. Her anger was growing. Supposedly these were just the papers that the regent had. A platoon of courtiers and administrative staff ran the more routine matters of the Kingdom.
Cormyr, the Forest Kingdom. The sparkling jewel of the Sea of Fallen Stars.
Honest, healthy and hearty these were the descriptive words that sprang to mind. Although the kingdom had always had its share of heartaches and setbacks. The rampaging of an ancient red dragon, the fall of King Azoun IV and the inner turmoil of the backstabbing nobles. Alusair was the reluctant regent of the Kingdom, hoping to keep it in one piece until the infant-king Azoun V grew into his kingdom.
Alusair closed her eyes and rubbed her temples. The pounding headache would not go away. Shieldmeet was less than a tenday away. Everyone in Cormyr was looking forward to the holiday. Alusair had just signed an order for a thousand pigs to be bought for the feasts to be held in Suzail. This made her even angrier to admit that her wit and strength were reduced to signing orders to slaughter a thousand pigs for a feast.
Alusair stood so quickly she knocked the chair crashing into a candelabrum, fortunately not lit, and winced at the sound of metal crashing on stone. Immediately a servant appeared to clean the mess up. Alusair in a rage shouted at the servant to be out.
Alusair stalked over to the mantle and grabbed her sword and ripped the now dusty sheath from it and snapped into her first defense form. She flowed quickly into the opposing forms, elegantly moving into each form progressing from basic to advanced. A small sheen of perspiration formed on her forehead. Alusair smirked a little. Her fine edge was starting to dull. Paperwork and political bickering kept her from honing her physical skills. Feeling better she shook her head free of the remains of her headache.
A quiet but solid knock came at the door. Alusair looked up to see Queen Filfaeril standing at the door. Her broad smile indicating she knew her frustrations. Alusair broke into a quiet chuckle and waved her in.
Your Ladyship I bring news. The womans voice a light tenor. A Zhent caravan was seen at the border of Aunaroch, by a young officer in the Dragons. It was met by a motley bunch of humanoids on the edge of the Stonelands. It seems that the Zhents are selling weapons and armor to the humanoids that live in the Stonelands. The young officer
Who was the officer? Alusair interrupted.
Um, Aeryn of House Dauntinghorn. Why?
No reason, go on
Anyway it seems the young officer followed them, even sneaking into the makeshift camp somehow, he also noted that the Zhents are selling food and.....pottery. Although it was not apparent how the humanoids paid the Zhent caravaners. Filfaeril shook her head, holding a finger to her lips. Its disturbing to say the least.
Alusair looked out the window. The clouds scuttled across the leaden sky managing to look ashamed of their dark bulges. Several curtains of rain came down on the sea to the south. The sounds of the castle and city beyond were muted. Alusair thought of Azoun, the infant king who had just learned to walk, and wondered if he would approve of her decisions when she handed the kingdom over to him. Alusair turned and looked at the dowager queen.
Your advice? She asked.
Title of Baron, a stipend of 1,000 gold a month and a platoon of Dragons. Also landrights to any peasants willing to cultivate the arid Stonelands. Filfaeril sighed and lowered her eyes. We must shield the Stonelands from the Zhentarim, for we cannot afford the vulnerability from that direction. Not with the trade conflict with Sembia and the Drow presence to the Northeast, not to mention the unknown floating city of Shades that appeared in Aunaroch earlier this year. By the way have you heard a response from the last ambassador?
Alusair turned once again to the stormy sea. Under her breath she mumbled; No, not yet. Alusair sighed and rubbed her temples, the headache was returning. Only the sea is safe. Only the sea. Poor Azoun. It seems I tend a leaking ship amidst a storm. Over her shoulder she spoke louder. Do it dear Filfaeril, post it in every city from here to Waterdeep. I want it seen before Shieldmeet.
Filfaeril smirked and nodded. Her inner worries of the type of people who might respond remained unspoken. She turned to leave when Alusair stopped her.
And Filfaeril She sighed. Double the offer. I want it done.

The wizard Daekyn Firehand was led down an immense hall, marble floors and mosaic walls filled his sight. The clack of the guards iron shod boots echoed as he was led to Fzoul's chambers. When the oaken doors opened to let Daekyn inside the guards snapped to attention at either side of the doors. The tall muscular man who stood within turned to the sound of then doors opening.
Greetings Daekyn...it has been a long time. Too long. Fzoul Chembryl said. I was surprised and intrigued by your missive.... to say the least.
Daekyn glibly replied; My Lord, yes it has been far too long since I have had the pleasure of an audience My Lord, as you are aware, I have been hunting the murderers of my parents for many years, when I realized that I could combine my revenge with furthering your interests, I knew you would be interested"
Fzoul walked to the side of the book filled study and indicated a pair of chairs. Yes, please sit down. I have ordered refreshments to be brought to us. Fzoul paused and smiled. Fire Ale still your favorite?
Daekyn nodded. "Thank you My lord, you are most gracious" and added a smile. And your memory as sharp as ever"
Fzoul smiles and sits opposite Daekyn in a large black leather chair, indicating a smaller cloth chair the color of spilt blood in front of him. Daekyn sits down smoothly, his every movement studied and paced.
Fzoul says: I have been trying to follow your exploits over the years, but I am afraid that my information network isn't what it used to be. It seems I lost you for a few years.... looks as if you left our plane???
Daekyn smiles diplomatically before replying. Yes I did, went to a place that was called Arakeem for a number of years before being able to return to Faerun. As well as a few other places called Grabon, and an interesting place known as Dragon Mountain. Daekyn made a short hand motion indicating a cut in the thread of that conversation. "My Lord, everyone in the realms knows that the Black Network is attempting to breach the northern borders of Cormyr"
Fzouls eyes widen just as a servant appears bringing a tray of delicacies, and a two glasses of Fire Ale. Fzoul dismisses him immediately. Yes, well.... he said as he took both glasses of Fire Ale and offered them both to Daekyn at the same time. Daekyn took a small moment before taking the one from his right hand. Only the barest glint of humor sparkled in his eye as he sipped at the ale. I am interested in what you know of what our plans are in regards to Cormyr. I had thought I was obvious in my plans of helping the poor humanoids repel intruders to their homeland in the Stonelands, but was unaware I had public plans in regards to Cormyr.
Daekyn continues unabatedly. However, I have come up with an operation that will allow you to breach those borders, with no resistance, and ensure that once you hold them, that they stay held.
Fzoul sardonically raises his glass to Daekyn. Oh? Cormyr has always been a thorn in the side of the Network, but I may be more interested in the Stonelands as just a simple trade route....
Daekyn interrupts. As you know my Lord, I am a very straight forward person, so I will come to the point and explain my plans to you. However, this is a very long-term plan, but knowing how patient you are in achieving your goals, I know you will have the foresight to appreciate its complexity
Fzoul blinks and lowers his glass. I appreciate your candor, please go ahead.
Daekyn gently puts his glass of ale on the side table before continuing. For years now, the Stonelands and its humanoid inhabitants have been a concern of Cormyr's, they have even so much as written into their laws that anyone who goes in and clears the Stonelands and makes it safe for travel shall be granted land rights to the Stonelands and the title, for what that is worth, of Baron. I intend on making use of that law, but my long-term goals are not what Cormyr would hope for
Fzoul leans forward almost imperceptibly, obviously interested, as Daekyn persisted Since I have assisted them, through my own need, before, I am more likely to be trusted as an ally then a stranger. Once the Stonelands are controlled and a small keep set up, I shall begin replacing or corrupting the soldiers they supply with those that are loyal to our cause rather than the Purple Dragon's. Ironic that essentially I will use their own soldiers to bring down their country. Once all is in place, instead of having a secure border, the Stonelands will be an open door way with an already established force of Zhentarim troops. Daekyn pauses dramatically. Here is where my goals and the Black Networks come together.
Fzoul interrupts by saying The steel regent is a shrewd warrior who has many resources. Duping her is not as easy as you make it sound.
Daekyn nods in agreement. No, no of course not, but I will see that her hands are filled.
Fzoul smiles and deposits his now empty drink on the table in between him and Daekyn. Pray continue....
Daekyn takes a breath. Before the Zhentarim would make its play, I will, from behind the shadows, instigate the already disloyal Nobles to further rebellion. They have already made moves in several of Cormyr's cities, pushing them to open rebellion will not be that much of a step....
Fzoul chuckles and nods realizing that the young mage before him knew Corymyr's current problems quite well.
Regardless of which side wins," Daekyn continued "Cormyr will be in chaos, with my forces guarding the Northern border of course. Once the smoke clears between the Regent and the other nobles, the stage will be set for a more powerful and organized force to move in.
Ah.... interesting.... Fzoul said sitting back in his chair, his blue eyes flashing.
The Nobles that hired Gardent Canine will be ruined, which is my revenge, in either case because if they win they will be crushed by the Zhentarim, if they lose they will be crushed by the regent, and you will get your opportunity to gain at the least a foot hold in Cormyr, if not the nation in its entirety. Daekyn was intense at this point, and realized he had worked himself up when Fzoul raised his hand to pause Daekyn. Fzoul's blue eyes focused on something inward as his smile faded. A few minutes passed as Daekyn stirred impatiently. Suddenly Fzoul blinked and refocused his eyes on Daekyn.
Pardon for the intrusion...." Fzoul said with a grin, "Manthran had a problem in a trade disagreement with a drow caravan. The problem is now...resolved.
Thought I smelled something burning.... Daekyn whispered
Fzoul folds his hands across his lap. I am intrigued by your plan, but wary.
As you should be, I am of course here not only to seek your permission, but your advice. Daekyn interposes.
Allow me to digress for a minute. Fzoul said as he stood and walked to a small bureau. Opening a drawer he removes a small bottle, which he opens and drinks from directly. Fzoul coughs once and turns back to Daekyn, slipping the bottle back into the bureau to Daekyn. I am a man reborn, and revitalized. I have overcome many of the obstacles that have fallen before me. Most of us were, shall we say, vulnerable and unguided, In the Time of Troubles. Fzoul shuts his eyes for a brief moment and pauses.
I hope you are well my lord. Daekyn says
Fzoul opens his eyes, which burn with an inner intelligence. Of course, thank you for your concern. I am the direct engineer of Bane's grand plan on Faerun. I have brought the Network out of the shadows to be a leading power of this region. My... our plans are many.
Daekyn exclaims. Yes my Lord, if I may my lord, allow me to explain what resources I would need from you.... to help in your advice towards these plans.
Fzoul blinks, and waits patiently for Daekyn to continue.
Nothing, nothing but your inaction for the moment. Daekyn extends his hands in entreaty. I only need you to withdraw your supply actions for the moment. Fzoul raises an eyebrow. Until I can take control of the Stonelands and eliminate any variables that might disrupt my plan and gain the confidence of Cormyr. As things progress, I think it would be advisable to slowly integrate troops that are loyal to the Zhentarim into my soldiers ranks.
Fzoul puts a finger to his lips in thought, and begins to walk around the room. Hmmm.
Daekyn follows Fzouls path across the room. I will explain it as soldiers I have recruited from previous dealings, which cannot be detected as a lie, Daekyn smiles. Because it will be the truth. I plan on recruiting the humanoids, if they are reasonable, that already reside there, and if not, then to eliminate them. Something I cannot do if they are still receiving supplies from the Network. Daekyn pauses as Fzoul thinks.
Fzoul looks up at Daekyn over the last comment. I have fomented similar plans in the past. Which have had different degrees of success. However with several new.... variables...that have entered into the region I would be interested in working with you. The Humanoids that exist there ARE a variable which I believe should be utilized, if only because of something I know that you may not. Fzoul slips into an awkward silence. They are not.... normal.
Daekyn asks. They are being altered by the Lich that resides there? Which by the way is an intricate part of my plan. Daekyn smirks. Another variable I will use to our benefit.
Fzoul nods respectfully at Daekyns knowledge. A strange mix of warped magical energy, something I am having analyzed, and a combination of living environments and diet have altered these humanoids. Each family unit we have had contact with, have an enlarged sense of conscience.... and intelligence. I would claim divine touched, but it seems mundane enough to rule that theory out.
Daekyn nods and says. Hmm, then I agree that they should be utilized. Interesting, then perhaps they shall indeed be more open to logical reason.
Fzoul resumes. Besides guarding what they consider their home, however, they are not too interested in warfare. Indeed they seem to want to avoid it at all costs. Perhaps reluctant allies, is all that you can hope to afford with these humanoids.
Daekyn not indicating he heard Fzoul speaks into the air. And if they can only receive their supplies through me, then they should be easily controlled. As they say, the Enemy of my Enemy is my friend.
Fzoul strides over to the chair in which Daekyn sits and says. I have a warning Daekyn Firehand, wizard of Cloud Peak.
Daekyn looks and smoothly replies. I would be blessed by your wisdom my lord. Daekyn knew that this could be the deal breaker that he was waiting for Fzoul to spring on him.
Fzoul seemed to swell a bit and his eyes flashed alarmingly blue, like the eye of a hurricane. You cannot hope to know, even a portion of Bane's grand plan. I am his canvas and his tool. If you become a hindrance to HIS plan, then you shall be removed. The church grows and the Network is far more intricate than you can realize. The designs of Bane and his chosen are a grand masterwork painting, you are but an ink spot in the overall scheme. Your plan for vengeance is nothing to me. Fzoul blinks and eases back away from Daekyn. His features once again becoming normal. "But I agree that our plans can coincide, even benefiting, from each other for a time."
Very fair My Lord, as you know, I only bring this proposal to you because I feel it has something valid and valuable to offer, and because our dealings in the past have been of equal benefit, which I hope provides me with some credibility as to my ability to follow through with an agreement. Daekyn replied.
Fzouls lips quirked in a grin. Agreed.
Daekyn maintains his line of questioning. Then may I proceed with laying the foundation of my plans? And may I count upon your support of inaction?
Fzoul turns a bit and walks to the bureau half reaching for the drawer in which the mysterious small bottle came from. Plus, I feel a presence about you, that I haven't felt for a long time. You move across the fabric of the world, not with it. After a short pause Fzoul turns to Daekyn with a smile. Yes, I think that again we can become allies.
Daekyn beams. My lord you have again shown me the wisdom of your Power.
Fzoul shakes a finger at Daekyn, interrupting him. I will require a mageling to accompany you. Something I was working with the Humanoids with.... I want a portal built in the Stonelands...with the gaping hole that was Tilverton being guarded by the Purple Dragons I will need quick access to that side of the mountains. Fzoul pointed a finger at a map not previously glimpsed by Daekyn. Fzoul almost whispered the rest. This shall benefit both of us I think. Fzoul raises his voice and says. The mage will know me by my alias Waylon Eris.
Daekyn warily but with vigor replied. Agreed. I was about to suggest such an arrangement, however, this portal shall take time in creating, I want one built that will be large enough to move supplies and troops through... Daekyn blinked at the thought of creating such a monstrosity. Fzoul mentioned it in passing, but Daekyn had an inkling of what it entailed. What mageling could build a portal for Fzoul? although a temporary singular one should suffice for now.
Fzoul snapped his fingers and turned to face Daekyn, and amused look on his face. I have a gift for you Daekyn, in thanks for our past arrangements." A servant arrives carrying a small wooden box in his hands. A certain amount of care in holding the box is apparent.
You are too kind my lord. Daekyn guardedly says.
Nonsense. Courtesy and soul.... the gold and silver of powerful men. Fzoul grabs the box carefully and opens the lid facing Daekyn. He tilts it down to show its contents to Daekyn. Inside are a dozen or so tear shaped gems, of varying hues. Daekyn instantly recognizes the stones as King's Tears. A veritable dragon's horde of mythical and ultra rare gemstones. Take these as a thank you for your service to Bane.
Daekyn attempting to maintain his composure stammers. My Lord, you. your generosity is as great as your Wisdom, I thank you.
Fzoul closes the lid and hands the box to Daekyn. Daekyn stands up and puts on his gloves, as if preparing to leave, then accepts the chest and puts it under his arm. I take my leave of you my Lord and thank you for your time, generosity and Wisdom. I regret that I cannot stay longer, but I have much to do and must make my way west, and again, I thank you for our successful history together.
Excellent. We shall talk again soon. Look for the mageling soon. I shall send a red coin to accompany the mageling.... as a sign to you. Although this one does not know the Network is involved, nor the church's involvement. Fzoul extended his hand to Daekyn.
Daekyn warmly grasps Fzouls hand in his own. Excellent, I shall send you weekly reports as to my progress, and as to my location, so that you may send your mageling to me directly. Daekyn turns to go, but stops. By the way? Have you had an opportunity to inspect the new safe house in Waterdeep?
Fzoul Chembryl nods and says. Yes, I am quite satisfied. Now go well Firehand. May our paths coincide longer than necessity demands.
Daekyn says. Live well and strong in the glory of Bane my Lord. Daekyn bows his head towards Fzoul. And may the winds be at our backs....
1st of Eleasias, 1372
3rd of Eleasias, 1372
The Kings Castle in Suzail is a fortified structure that is well separated from the rest of Suzail by Lake Azoun, the famous Royal Gardens, and the various smaller castles of lesser nobility. The shining castle is beautiful and is featured often in artwork sold across Cormyr. The towers and parapets are gilt in white marble. The banners and flags of Cormyr and the Purple Dragon fly proudly in the summer breeze.
The courtyard is filled with a hundred Knights of the Royal Order of Purple Dragons. They face Daekn as he enters. Daekyn traverses the courtyard towards the steps of the castle, each line of Knights snaps to attention. Just as Daekyn reaches the steps, the doors open wide. Alusair, the Steel Regent, holding an infant swaddled in gold and purple robes, walks out. She is accompanied by a raven-haired beauty whose purple robes cover her feet and hands.
Daekyn bows regally and says. Your Grace.
Alusair smiles beatifically and replies. Greetings Daekyn Firehand. Wizard of Cloudpeak and Realm-friend.
I humbly thank you for receiving me on such short notice. Daekyn says as he stands.
Alusair looks down at the infant in her arms. His majesty and I greet you as Realm-friend and invite you to enter the King's Castle. Alusair looks sharply at Daekyn.
I accept your invitation with the greatest of pleasure that I once again may be of service to the Crown of Cormyr. Daekyn loudly replies.
The Knights in the courtyard all shout Cormyr. In a rich baritone. As Alusair raises the cute chubby infant king. The infant king chortles in laughter and blows a spit bubble on his fist at them. With a slight wave of his hand and a snap of his finger, Daekyn produces a rare Crimson orchid and offers it to the Regent. Please accept this smallest of tokens My Grace.
Alusair frowns ever so slightly as she takes the expensive flower. "Thank you, for such a rare and lovely gift, but I fear you do the Orchid a disservice by giving it to one so plain. Alusair steps aside and waves Daekyn in with a free hand.
Daekyn proceeds inside. Not at all my lady, it is the blossom that pales in your radiance. Daekyn catches the barest hint of a smile on the companion of Alusair. However the regent does not seem affected by the compliment. My Grace, in my travels I have learned much about your situation in the Stonelands...and I believe I can once again be of service to Cormyr. Alusair steps to Daekyns side and proceeds into the castle stately. Her raven-haired companion follows, as well as three Knights, who appear to be officers. The long hallways are decorated with hundreds of portraits of past kings and nobles. Each of their wise faces seems to follow the partys procession. The silence of the hall ahead echoes your footsteps. In fact the halls seem nigh deserted. Only a single servant is seen, and she ducks around a corner far ahead of the party.
Daekyn blithely continues. When I saw the notice of your search for adventures, I realized that I must follow my sense of duty and report to you.
The infant-king continues his blowing spit bubbles, while staring at Daekyn. His wide brown eyes shine with clarity and intelligence. Daekyn barely notices.
Alusair nods and smiles tightly. Thank you, but perhaps we should adjourn into a more comfortable room to discuss this in detail? Her words echo down the empty hallway as she waits for Daekyn to continue with her.
Daekyn nods. Of course My grace.
Daekyn starts down the hall again with Alusair at his side. The companions fall in line behind. Daekyn eyes the hallway as covertly as he can. Reaching the Throne room, Daekyn notices it is disturbingly empty. A black shroud hangs over the high-backed seat of power on a dais in the center of the room. Alusair pauses significantly for a moment. The three Knights and the raven-haired companion drop to one knee. Alusair does nothing but stare at the throne. Daekyn pauses just momentarily before dropping to one knee. A servant appears from a doorway and comes forward to take the infant from Alusair. A chubby fist rises almost as if in forewarning. The other chubby fist is busily being devoured by the boys smiling mouth.
Alusair turns once again to the throne draped in black, pauses significantly again before turning to Daekyn and indicating a side door leading into a comfortable study. "Shall we?"
At your convenience, My Grace. Daekyn looks around again, but no other sign of people are to be found. As the party moves through the large chamber their footsteps echo loudly. Two of the Knights stop at the doorway, while Alusair, her raven-haired companion, and the youngest officer enters the study. The young officer closes the door behind him. The study is lit by several braziers and a large fire burning in a hearth. Several writing desks dominate the room, mostly covered by papers and books. The wall opposite the door is dominated by a large map of Cormyr, including the Stonelands. Another wall has a large bay window looking out onto the sea.
Alusair walks over behind the largest desk. And lifts her hand to indicate the raven-haired woman who walks by Daekyn staring intently. "This is Caladnei, my advisor. Behind you is Lieutenant Dauntinghorn of the Dragons, he is familiar with the subject matter." Caladnei sits down in a chair by the window, behind Alusair. Although no physical clue is present you can feel her hidden smile. Alusair waves at a chair by the largest desk. "Please be comfortable."
Daekyn eyes the room carefully. Greetings to you both. Daekyn eyes Lieutenant I believe we have met Lieutenant. Daekyn takes his seat.
The Lieutenant clears his throat and shifts uncomfortably. "Have we Grand Sir?" he asks. Alusair raises an eyebrow in amusement.
Daekyn picks at some unseen lint on his robes and says. Yes, yes I believe so, when we raided the lair of the Fire Knives several years ago, you led one of the squads of Dragons. It is good to see you have done well for yourself, your performance that day was, satisfactory.
The Lieutenant smiles ingratiatingly, obviously not recognizing Daekyn. "Yes, Grand Sir. I have indeed been lucky to serve in many capacities for the Crown." A servant arrives pushing a small cart of delicacies and drinks. Fire Ale predominates the tray, although stoppered and sealed. Alusair watches Daekyn closely.
Daekyn attempts to not notice her attention. But I digress, we have an urgent priority I believe?
Alusair sits down and dismisses the servant, who nearly flees. Throwing a fearful look at Daekyn as she passes. "Yes we do, Firehand."
Daekyn wonders briefly about the drinks laid before him, and looks up at Alusair who was watching his face closely. She stands and walks over to unseal the bottle, uncork it and then pours two glasses side by side. After which she sits down with neither glass, leaving the decision to Daekyn.
Daekyn smiles tightly and says. I have in my travels, benefited greatly both magically and monetarily, I now believe it is time for me to return that karma. Ah the aroma of Cormyrean Fire Ale, nothing in the Realms compares. No matter where I go, nothing quite matches it. An awkward silence ensues while Daekyn shrugs and persists. I have found that the offer you have presented might in some ways be too generous my lady. For it is undoubtedly going to attract those that are more concerned with gold than loyalty and, with your recent troubles in Cormyr, it might put another strain on resources better used in more distressed cities with in your realm.
Alusair raises an eyebrow, waits for a second and then laughs impishly. "Drink and be safe Firehand.... no poison awaits you in my drink." The officer takes one of the glasses to Alusair, who drinks heartily from it. "Yes, I suppose business is what we are here for.....please go on."
Ah, poison was far from my mind your Grace, simple etiquette, I would not want to seem too forward. Daekyn takes a glass and drinks from it vigorously. Ah yes, and it tastes and fine as its aroma. Caladnei muffles a smile under her hand. However, let me pursue the point further
Alusair interrupts saying. "I was intrigued by your offer Mage, but I tend to think in terms that result in a dramatic ending...a fate reserved for warriors I fear. We tend to think with the sharp end." Alusair throws a warning look at Caladnei who is struggling to maintain her composure.
Daekyn blinks but carries on. I am finding that as I mature, the need for roots is becoming more and more important. Although my home in Waterdeep has suited me, I have always felt a fondness for Cormyr. And the opportunity to secure those roots is very appealing, and I believe, in a way, that I owe Cormyr this. For it has always been fair to me.
Alusair nods her head. The forest kingdom is fair, and DESPITE recent tragic events. Is a healthy and hearty kingdom. One I hope the Infant-King Azoun will lead into further prosperity.
Under her breath. Caladnei whispers. "And release you from the humdrum of court politics my lady."
To be frank your Grace, I am prepared to make the Stonelands safe for both trade and travel; to deal with the humanoid raiders, to deal with the undead lich whose power in the Stonelands is growing, and to make sure that it, as a Northern border for Cormyr, is secure
Alusair looks up at the mention of the Lich. "Undead lich, Wizard? I was not aware of this.... She looks over to the Lt. who looks green under her gaze. He shrugs almost helplessly.
Daekyn blinks and says. Oh? I assumed you were aware of the threat of the Lich.
The Lieutenant clears his throat. My Grace, I am aware of several 'threats' to your Regency and the Crown from the Stonelands, but many are born of rumors and fears of the common folk. The Lieutenant nervously loosens his collar.
Alusair begins to look impatient. "Wizard you intrigued me by refusing our gold. I empathize with your desire to settle, but unless you are unfamiliar with my offer of the.... Stonelands...than I am not one to believe in your altruistic motives. Please speak plainly, for I am not as clever as you. Have you the intelligence, the resources and the guts to clean out the Stonelands, making it safe to settle by the common people and keep it open for trade along Moonsea Way?
Daekyn smiles and says. Oh My Grace, there are no altruistic motives here. But as with any "merchant" I want to make sure my bid beats anyone elses. I have the available funds to front much of the expenses, which I will be able to recoup if you grant the tax exemption I requested, and the gains of land, treasure from the Lich, and by commerce once the lands begin to produce are far and away more valuable.
Alusair leans forward. Hmmmm?
And to answer your question. Daekyn leans forward ever so slightly, his gaze intensifies and the years of adventuring can be seen with in his steel eyes. Yes, I posses the abilities and the resources to make the Stonelands safe, productive, and a place that will be sought after for settlement.
Alusair turns her head to look at the map of the region on the wall. A merchant baron? Yes, well... Alusair stands and walks over to the window, looking out over the sea.
My Lady, may I ask you a question? Daekyn asks.
Still with her back to Daekyn, Alusair speaks softly. "The years tend to be unkind when traveled rootless and without family." A pale hand imperceptibly snakes its way to Caladneis shoulder, who leans into the touch. Alusair blinks and says louder to Daekyn. Yes of course. Ask away.
Daekyns voice drops an octave and his voice takes on a husky tone. When you fight for Cormyr, for your home, for everything you hold dear in this existence, what do you feel? alusair says:
Alusair turns around to face Daekyn, matching his hard eyes with the gray steel of metal flashing in her eyes. "Righteousness and pride."
I have fought for gold, for magic trinkets, for other peoples goals. I have risked my life and even my very soul for things. Never have I felt the satisfaction of defending my home, my people, or my heritage. In my years I have held many titles, but nothing that is meaningful. Can a man exist without a sense of place in the universe? Daekyn stands and begins to pace, subconsciously reaching for a pipe that isnt there. My heart is empty My grace, that...that is what I will gain from this endeavor, and that is worth more gold, more treasure than any Dragon's horde in Faerun. Caladnei leans forward and frowns a little.
Alusair looks stunned. She looks over to Caladnei, who does not acknowledge her. Yes, well....."
Daekyn interrupts. All I ask then My Lady, is permission to trygrant me the Platoon of Dragons, and I shall make sure that the Stonelands are a secure and safe part of the Kingdom. Daekyn stops pacing and stares intently at Alusair who is lost in thought.
After a few moments Alusair looks up and says. I am confident that Cormyr will be stronger and more prosperous by our association. In the end, all will be one. The banner of the Purple Dragon will fly unhindered above Suzail forever. I will grant you this, I will also grant the temporary tax relief for a period of 5 years to you, and also grant you a warning."
Daekyn nods in slight amusement. A warning? Of course my Lady, any benefit from your experience would be greatly appreciated.
"I am but the Regent of Cormyr. I am holding the Purple Throne for King Azoun V. Nothing I grant now is binding when he takes power." Alusair almost whispers the last part.
Of course my Lady, I only seek that which Cormyr already ordains by its bylaws, and would never think to obtain anything that might be construed as permanent all is at the will and wisdom of the King. Daekyn raises an eyebrow in consternation. Excellent My Lady. I shall send word immediately to have my supplies brought into the Stonelands, where we will set up a temporary base of operations.
"Your allegiance to the Infant-King will have a lasting effect. An effect that will bond your will and wishes to his." Alusair says with an edge in her voice.
Thank you my lady, I look forward to a long and lasting relationship with Cormyr, a place I hope to call home.
Alusair looks at Caladnei who nods. A finger playfully outlines her lips. Alusair then looks back at Daekyn. Will you take him as your King now, as we all have?" The window darkens as a cloud skitters across the sun. The room seems as silent as a church.
Pausing briefly in thought, a hand to his chin Daekyn nods. Only if you feel that I would not be dishonoring the Future king since I have not yet achieved all that I have promised, but if you feel it would do him no dishonor, then I will gladly take him as my king now My Lady.
Alusair nods and looks stern. "I so wish it, but I will not force it from you....as a promise of allegiance made under duress usually breeds contempt. I will tell you now, that my existence is to provide safety for the Infant-King and to bring the Realm in one piece to his rule when he turns of age. I will have itperiod. Alusair walks to the door and opens it. Should you choose to take this course, I will be in the throne room, along with his majesty. Lieutenant Dauntinghorn will remain with you to answer any questions you may have. I urge you to do the 'right' thing." Caladnei stands and leaves with the regent.
Daekyn pauses just briefly before jumping up and turning around. Then I shall join you now my lady, and the future King." Daekyn looks around the now empty room. "My lady? Daekyn walks to the door and enters the Throne room. The throne room is now filled with hundreds of people. All standing quietly in rows determined by rank. By the time he was able to stand and follow Alusair, she is now standing by the Throne, which is gloriously displayed in brocaded purple silk, she is dressed in a gown of silver and gold; a small tiara of diamonds adorns her head. She smiles at you as you enter. The Infant-King is being held by Caladnei, who is currently making googley eyes at him while he screams in laughter.
Alusair intones regally. Daekyn Firehand? Mage of Cloud Peak?
Daekyn walks to the center of the aisle and responds clearly. Yes My Lady.
Member of the famed Storm Front?
Daekyn nods. Yes My Lady.
Alusair spreads her hands wide. And Realm-friend who has already brought us great rewards?
Daekyn bows his head slightly. Humbly, yes my lady.
I so name you as such and more on this day. Alusair looks over Daekyn to the assembled courtesans. I do something today which will have a lasting effect upon our Realm, a positive effect.
Alusair points at Daekyn and says. I name this man Daekyn Firehand.... An audible silence takes the audience. ...As nobility of the Realm. A Baron by title and station. Let his name be entered into the books forever, and let his children be citizens and nobles of this Realm. Alusair takes the Infant-king from Caladnei. By the name and power vested in me by the Infant-king Azoun V, I so name Baron Firehand as a citizen of the Realm. A stir goes around the room. You notice several people out rightly pointing and sneering at you. Baron Firehand, will you kneel and accept the touch of our rightful King who will then be and forever more your rightful King?
"Yes"
Alusair walks down the steps towards Daekyn. The Infant-king is quiet, despite sucking his pink chubby fist. Then receive the glory... Caladnei? Caladnei steps forward, a purple nimbus of magical energy already glowing around her hand. Caladnei looks at you in askance.
Yes My Lady. Daekyn quickly discerns the nature of the spell being prepared and walks to the bottom step, just below Alusair. Alusair lowers Azoun V, the infant-king of Cormyr to your forehead. A small (wet with drool) chubby hand reaches towards Daekyn. Azoun lightly touches your forehead, leaving a wet hand print, just as a flash of purple light goes off, followed quickly by a white glow and then a green spark. Caladnei gasps out loud and looks startled. Her eyes sweeping the room behind Daekyn. Daekyn looks equally surprised.
Alusair raises Azoun above her head. "All praise and glory to King Azoun V." The courtesans recite her cheer, but there is a general lack of enthusiasm. One man in particular sneers and walks out the back of the chamber. His last look is thrown at Daekyn and it smolders. Daekyn maintains his composure at the man, in fact, grins at him. With that the ceremony breaks into an unorganized celebration, with drinks being brought by servant dressed all in purple and silver. The nobles take turns trying to influence Daekyn, and convince him to join this group or that group. Later after the lackluster congratulations and general politicking by the courtesans, Daekyn is slipped a small paper note asking his presence in the study again. A messenger of the court, a small boy of blonde hair and blue eyes, waits for Daekyn. A quick look around reveals the lacking presence of Alusair and Caladnei.
Daekyn makes his way to the study and slips in the darkened room. Alusair and Caladnei and the young officer stand in the darkened study. A single candle illuminates the room. Alusair looks up at his entrance. "Please shut the door behind you Baron Firehand. Daekyn bows slightly and shuts the door. "Now the meat and potatoes.... ware the nobility of Cormyr Baron Firehand..."
Daekyns slightly grins. Yes my Lady.
Alusair nearly whispers. They politick and maneuver and manipulate....do not join their ranks!!! Do what you have promised, and in the end you will be rewarded." The faint scent of pipe smoke lingers in the room, but Daekyn notices nobody is smoking one.
That is all I intend on My Lady, I have found that over the years these types do not warrant my interests, just my guard. Daekyn discreetly checks out the shadows of the study and thinks to himself. I though he said he wasn't going it interfere.
Alusair walks over and presents the infant-king to you. "The child of the future of Cormyr, Baron. Would you like to hold him?"
Daekyn leans his staff against the wall. I am honored my lady. Daekyn takes the child, holding him gently. Hello my once and future king. The infant, whose eyes are half closed due to sleepiness. Smiles at Daekyn lazily. The Lieutenant suddenly whips out his sword and lunges towards the infant-king, a look of hatred etched on his face. Daekyn instantly, without thought darts aside and raises a hand to retaliate, while protecting the infant.
Enough!!!!!! Cries Alusair. It was just a small test my Baron... Lieutenant sheath your sword.
Daekyn lowers his hand, a Starfire glowing in his hand, ready to be loosed. A test? Already understanding the effects of a powerful Geas placed on him. Annoyed Daekyn slowly dismisses the Starfire. He warily eyes both the Lieutenant and Caladnei, who is clutching her stomach in silent laughter. The Lieutenant sheathes his sword and bows deeply and apologetically.
Alusair walks to Daekyn and takes the infant-king from him. I shall await for your news Baron......here is a small gift from me. Alusair holds a shiny gold medallion that appears to be absolutely blank. You can use this to put your own symbol on it to wear. As the Baron Firehand.
Daekyn accepts the medallion and slips it into a pouch. Thank you My Lady. Daekyn retrieves his Staff. And I thank you for your hospitality, but I must be making my way. There is much preparation to be done.
Alusair says. Yes, there is. Go now...oh one more thing. Lieutenant Aeryn Dauntinghorn here will be your liaison and new Captain of the Dragons stationed with you. The Lieutenant looks surprised by his promotion. He is knowledgeable of the region and is....lucky.
Daekyn nods knowingly and bows to Alusair. May I take my leave of you? At her nod he straightens and turns to the Lieutenant. Excellent. Lieutenant Aeryn Dauntinghorn, I will be in contact as to where to meet me in The Stonelands. Daekyn pauses and smiles. Rather I should say, Captain. The Captain looks at Daekyn and nods in disbelief. Excellent. Says Daekyn.
Alusair says. Go now and take our blessings Baron Firehand.
