| Friday, August 29th. Stats: Wake-up time: 6 a.m. Hours of Sleep before con: 1.75 Costume(s): Yuzuki (Chobits) Merchandise Purchased: Arrows of the Queen, Arrow's Fall, and Brightly Burning by Mercedes Lackey; Many Waters by Madeleine L'Engle; Wish 1-2, 4 by CLAMP (the Tokyopop translation). Wow, what an adventure Worldcon was. From its sheer size to the number of panels and the cost of attendence, Worldcon truly is the centre jewel in the crown of the worldwide convention scene. I was privileged to be a part of this convention on Friday and for the tail end of Sunday due to some interesting circumstances, so this will be my report regarding what I saw. Keep in mind that the convention actually lasted five full days and I saw but a slice of everything that was going on. Nay, not even a slice...a mere sliver. I heard tell, for example, that there were four thousand panels, of which I only witnessed three. Please also keep in mind that there were many factors which made Worldcon a very negative experience for me, but that this in no way reflects the con as a whole and my personal circumstances had a part ot play in this. This was written on the Friday of the con: All I have to say is that Worldcon is a study in extremes. The negative: - piss poor organisation (even after everyone reassured us it was all checked out and all, Eric appeared not on the participant list, but did appear on the panel list...which meant he was scheduled for his panels, but there was no badge for him....I still did not appear on the participant list, so no badge for me either for quite some time...) - zero cosplaying. I was the ONLY cosplayer there. - poorly organised schedule. There are a lot of panels and it would help if they were categorised a little or something like that. - two out of three of the panels. The first panel, regarding getting started in anime, I felt like the older people on the panel rather hijacked it, especially Ms. (Mrs.?) West, though I suppose Brian and "Eric" didn't really do much to put a stop to that. Seriously, sometimes it's nice when people hold back a little without putting other people on the spot. The third panel, regarding Japanese influence on N.American media...boy was I the fish out of water there. It was horrible being up there and not having a damn thing to say. The panel swayed off topic from general influences to totally comic book oriented stuff and that is a realm I know nothing about. The positive: - possibly-Japanese guy took a picture of me in my Yuzuki costume...only picture of the day! - dealer's room heaven. The first dealer's room I've ever truly been happy in. So many wonderful sci-fi products. Even a first glance around yielded a whole list of stuff I would love to have bought. I bought four books and three manga, though I was waffling between the manga and two other things...cd versions of songs from Mercedes Lackey's books and a teddy bear dressed in Q's outfit (it was large and soft and mmm....Q....). - a convention where I belong. People there speak my language. I cease to be what Winnie terms a dictionary and become someone learning to become confident with her own vocabulary again. It's the only place where I sound common asking someone if i may purchase some of his or her varied and numerous pieces of literature. In other words, they speak nerd and I love it. - first-time panelist. Being a panelist was a dream come true. Honestly, I am very shy, as you all know, but once I'm speaking in front of an audience that vanishes. I have an opinion and I say it honestly and without hesitation. I'm MUCH better when I have notes written up in advance, but there wasn't any time to prepare (I was filling in for Anna on one panel and Eric on another). I think that I didn't quite make a fool of myself...I hope. I've always wanted to be a panelist and maybe there's some way I can help out at AN or Toronto Trek in that capacity. - setting an example. After the (for me) disastrous anime in the media panel, a gentleman approached me because I had made mention in my introduction that I had founded the anime club at my school. He informed me that he was a teacher, that he had recently instituted a sci-fi course in his school and that he was interested in hearing what I had to say about how I was able to form an anime club. I think I really did help and encourage him and I'm glad. I definitely said more to him after the panel than I did during that entire panel. It felt good to know that maybe I'll have an indirect hand in starting another anime club. Oh, and they study Ender's Game in the first part of his sci-fi course, which automatically means I wish him all the best. That book is 1337. ^_^ The downright disturbing and awful: - going to sleep at 4 and waking up at 6. zombie mode engaged! |
