Feeding the Brain
What:    "Feeding the Brain"

Why:     Foods provide carbohydrates and
sugar for energy, and protein for
making amino acids.  The food we eat
can either release or block the
neurotransmitters that make us alert or
               sleepy.  Keeping yourself hydrated will
               enhance the electrochemical reactions
in your brain.  Performance is significantly
impaired when the body is low on
               fluids.

How:     Have students drink water right before
class.  Allow them to bring bottled water
or make trips to the water fountain
              during class.  Role-model good eating
              habits.

When we go to the park with friends, we often
bring a snack with us.  On this day, we had
bottled water, carrots, blackberries, and frosted
mini-wheats.
