| What: "Cross Laterals" Why: When learners get stuck, it is usually in one of two ways. The "left brain stuck" is an analytical quagmire. The "right brain stuck" is just being overwhelmed. To solve either problem, get the other side of the brain to help you out. It is normal for blood flow to different sides of the brain to fluctuate during the day. You need to encourage use of both sides of the brain. Activate the whole brain through movement! How: To encourage use of both sides of the brain, take a break and try some "cross lateral" exercises. Touch hands to opposite knees, pat yourself on the back on the opposite side, pretend to conduct an orchestra (making mirror image movements with your hands), or touch your nose and hold opposite ear and then switch hands three times. This is my neighbor, Michael. We sang the song, "Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes" with a twist. We tried to do it while keeping arms crossed... It's harder than you think! |
