Interview Corner

Continuing our series from last month with the "DONT'S" of Interviewing:
-Don't answer with a simple "yes" or "no." Explain whenever possible. If you don't understand a question - or need a moment to think about it - say so.
-Never pretend to know something or someone when you don't.
-Don't rely on your application or resume to do the selling for you. Interviewers will want you to be convincing.
-Don't make negative remarks about present or former employers. When explaining your reasons for leaving, communicate your rationale professionally.
-Don't over-answer questions. If the interviewer steers the conversation into controversial - or even illegal - topics, try to do more listening than speaking. Keep your responses non-committal.
-Don't inquire about salary, vacations, benefits, bonuses or retirement on the initial interview unless you are sure the employer is interested in hiring you. If the interviewer asks what salary you want, give a range based on your research of the job market, but indicate that you're more interested in the opportunity for continued learning and professional development than in a specific salary.

Vendor of the Month
AP
Our October Vendor of the Month is AP Professionals! Learn more next month.

Hello to all.

There are several items I would like to update everyone on.

The IMA participated in Digital Rochester's Get Connected event held at Village Gate on September 9 for non-profit professional and networking organizations. We had great support from the current board in staffing our table, including Aretta Stillman, Nick Sudano, and Tate Russell, as well as past-president Chris Burke. The event attendance was estimated at 200-300 people, and was a great opportunity for us to the increase awareness of the IMA.

Our first meeting on October 15 is a student night, which is an extremely important outreach for the local chapter. I know that when I was in school, I had very little idea of what types of jobs were out there, and what is needed to develop a successful and rewarding career path. I would encourage members to come and share your experiences. This is an excellent opportunity to be a mentor, and allow others to learn from what worked right and what were the "bumps in the road"!

We had a suggestion to our LinkedIn user group from an IMA member that it may be useful to arrange some casual networking events by industry or specialization, such as cost accounting, not for profit, etc..  Perhaps we could facilitate some informal monthly or quarterly get-togethers where people with a particular area of interest could get together for a cup of coffee or lunch. I would encourage people to either email us with some suggestions or connect through LinkedIn and start a discussion. The key will be to keep this as simple as possible and I look forward to your feedback.  For example, I have interest in knowing if anyone has successfully applied for duty drawback, and would be interested in discussing this topic with others.

Bits of info:
Yearbooks are expected to be going to the printer next week, so members should expect to get them the last week of September or first week of October.
The IMA will have booths at RIT and SUNY Brockport career fairs the week of Sept 22.

Let us know if there are other events that the IMA would benefit from participating in.
