Collin:
One Year Post-DOC Band

September 6, 2004

Here we are! One year later!  Collin graduated from his DOC Band treatment on August 30, 2003 and boy has this year flown by!  Collin will be turning two in just a couple of weeks on September 21, so be sure to come back to his site to check out his second birthday page, which should be full of Wiggly Fun (hint hint!)

What has Collin been up to...

Collin has had a very busy year!  He is very (very) active and is a typical two year old.  He keeps mom and dad quite busy these days with just about everything.  This year Collin visited the zoo for the first time and discovered "choo-choos"!  He loves to visit the commuter rail down the street :P   And lately, he has been very interested in football! We are a Giants household, so the "J-E-T-S, JETS , JETS, JETS!" chant is not allowed!    Collin also enjoys "buh-ball" (baseball) and loves to watch any player (baseball, football, it doesn't matter, fall "boom"!
Collin at Daycare...

Collin thoroughly enjoys his new daycare and all the activities they have for him. This summer he was able to enjoy water play and the pool!  Last summer we were limited to that one hour a day.  I think he made up for lost time because he absolutely loves the water.

Verbally, Collin has really grown so much this past year.  He is putting words into sentences now (2-3 words) and is much easier to communicate with.
Summer fun!
One year later...are we glad we did it?

You bet! Collin's ears were so uneven that I cannot imagine how he would be able to wear things like hats and (sun)glasses.  For fourteen weeks, which by the way, flew by, we endured the 23 hour a day cranial band.. the sometimes stinky device that Mom and Dad took turns cleaning and rubbing down with that alcohol daily.. and the sadness we felt when Collin couldn't go in the pool during those hot days but for more than an hour...  We went through that and we were patient.  For just over 3 months we visited our great friends at the CT office in Paramus, NJ and wondered if it would all be worth it.  Now - we can honestly say that no one would ever know he had plagiocephaly, unless we told them.   I keep a small photo of Collin in his band nearby on my desk at work, as a reminder of those three and a half months.  He never cared about wearing it and was unaware of how much his parents had to shield the questions and sometimes stares.. Someday when he is older and understands we'll show him his headsicle, and I know that he will say, "Thanks, Mom and Dad!"

Since I'm always offering my advice... I would say the one thing that helped me was the
Yahoo Groups Bulletin Board for Plagiocephaly.  I always make sure I respond to any emails so if you have questions or just want to vent about your feelings or apprehensions regarding the Band, please don't hesitate to email me.    Good luck all and happy rounding!
Best regards,  Rhonda Gillespie (Collin's mom)
